THE MATCH-UP:
East Stroudsburg University opens the 2010 season at Pace (N.Y.) in the first-ever meeting between the two schools. The Warriors are coming off an 8-4 season highlighted by the fourth appearance in the NCAA Playoffs in school history. The Setters were 1-9 last season and 1-7 in the Northeast-10 Conference.

SEASON OPENERS: ESU is 25-11 in its previous 36 season openers under head coach Denny Douds. The Warriors won their last two season openers against Virginia Union, 14-11 in 2008 and 19-6 in 2009. ESU is 50-31-1 all-time in its first game of the season entering the 83rd year of varsity football.

NATIONAL RANKING: The Warriors were ranked No. 25 in the preseason edition of the AFCA Coaches Poll, but fell to second among others receiving votes after the opening weekend of the season. ESU is No. 13 in the D2Football.com poll, up three spots from No. 16 in the preseason poll. ESU's last game in the AFCA Top 25 was on Sept. 2, 2006, when the No. 18 Warriors fell to Bentley, 9-7, in the season opener.

ESU will play seven schools that were either ranked or received votes in the AFCA preseason poll - No. 6 California, No. 22 West Chester, and IUP, Bloomsburg, C.W. Post, Shippensburg and West Chester. California and West Chester both moved up one spot, Cal to No. 5 and WCU to No. 21, in this week's poll.

ESU vs. THE NORTHEAST-10:
The Warriors are 16-4-1 against current members of the Northeast-10 Conference and last faced a NE-10 member in the 2006 season opener vs. Bentley. ESU defeated Bentley, 72-17, and beat Southern Conn. State, 55-33, in the first round of the NCAA Division II Playoffs in 2005.

NEW DECADE: The Warriors wrapped up their winningest decade in school history in the 2000's, going 77-34 for a .694 winning percentage. They had nine winning records in 10 years, made three NCAA Playoff appearances, won PSAC East titles in 2002 and 2003, and had a school-record 11 wins in 2005. ESU has an all-time record of 442-282-19 (.608).

DEMANDING SCHEDULE: ESU will face the top two teams in each division in the PSAC preaseason poll when the PSAC-mandated schedule begins next week, as the Warriors will take on IUP, California, West Chester and Bloomsburg in consecutive weeks. California (11-4), West Chester (7-4) and Bloomsburg (8-3) combined for a 26-11 record last season, while IUP was 5-6 for its first losing season since 1982.

THE HEAD COACHES:
Denny Douds (Slippery Rock '63) holds the PSAC record for career wins with a 226-146-3 record in his 37th season as head football coach at ESU. Douds is in his 45th season at ESU overall and is one of five active coaches in Division II, and one of just 18 coaches in all of college football, with at least 200 career victories. He has led the Warriors to nine PSAC titles and four NCAA Playoff appearances. For more information on Coach Douds and the ESU coaching staff, please see page 10 of the game notes.

Douds is coaching his 376th career game this afternoon, while Chris Dapolito (Duke '05) is making his collegiate head coaching debut for Pace. Dapolito, a quarterback at Duke from 2001-04, was promoted to head coach after spending two seasons as offensive coordinator, assistant head coach and quarterbacks coach.

ESU IN THE NCAA PLAYOFFS: ESU played in the NCAA Division II Playoffs for the fourth time in school history last season, falling to Edinboro, 31-16, in the first round at Eiler-Martin Stadium. The Warriors have also played in the postseason in 1991, 2004 and 2005, when they advanced to the national semifinals.

PSAC PRESEASON POLL: ESU was picked to finish fifth in the 2010 PSAC East Coaches Poll, which was released at PSAC media day on August 2. The Warriors, who received one first place vote, were selected behind preseason favorite West Chester, Bloomsburg, C.W. Post and defending PSAC champion Shippensburg. A total of 12 points separated the top five schools in the poll. Kutztown was sixth, followed by Millersville and Cheyney.

In the West, defending division champion and three-time NCAA semifinalist California was picked first, followed by IUP and Clarion. Edinboro and Gannon were tied for fifth, with Slippery Rock, Mercyhurst and Lock Haven completing the list. The 2010 season will mark the third year of the PSAC State Game, which was held annually from 1960-1987 and returned in 2008.

WARRIORS ON RADIO: WVPO 840 AM is in its 48th season broadcasting ESU football and will once again carry all 11 games in 2010. Chuck Seese, the 2009 PSAC Heaslip Media Award winner, is in his 22nd season as the voice of the Warriors. He is joined in the booth by Bob Brittain, who is in his 10th year providing the color commentary.

WARRIORS ON TV: Blue Ridge TV-13 will broadcast ESU football for the 23rd year this season, with all five home games airing live across the region. Veteran play-by-play man Chris Doty is joined by color commentator Jim Riley and sideline reporter Mike Remish. ESU also expects to announce a partnership with PA SportsFever, which has broadcast seven games over the past three seasons.

ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICA: R-Sr. OLB Matt Freed was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America 1st team and R-Jr. OL Zach Sarginger was named to the Academic All-District 2nd team last fall. Freed, a History major, is the 5th Academic All-American in ESU football history and the 3rd Warrior to be selected to the 1st team. He was also an All-District selection as a sophomore in 2008. Sarginger, a Mathematics and Secondary Education major, was voted to the team in his first year of eligibility.

EVERYBODY'S ALL-AMERICAN: R-Sr. OLB Matt Freed has earned multiple All-America honors from the Associated Press and Daktronics (sports information directors) entering his final year at ESU. A look at Freed's career honors and highlights:

ESU had 43 true or redshirt freshman on last year's roster, 17 of whom saw their first career action. The Warriors played 8 true freshmen, 5 of whom return for the 2010 campaign - TB Eric Deery, TB Kendrick Williams, WR Bryan Ogden, DB D'Jon Tillman and P Joseph Janovic.

Jr. LB Mike Bergey was the only true freshman to letter in 2008, and Sr. CB David Castillo, Sr. OLB Mark Kalo and Sr. LB Kevin Schafer lettered in 2007.

OUT OF THE BLOCKS: Marshall was almost perfect in the first quarter last season, going 66-for-96 (68.8 percent) for 1,172 yards, 10 TDs and 3 interceptions. In the last two games, he was 7-for-8 for 177 yards and 3 TDs vs. Slippery Rock and 3-for-6 for 161 yards and a TD vs. Edinboro in the NCAA Playoffs. Against Slippery Rock, he was 5-for-5 for 162 yards and 3 TDs (on consecutive plays) in the first 4:23, throwing TD passes of 22, 24 and 80 yards.

Marshall opened the year going 11-for-12 for 94 yards in the first quarter of the season opener at Virginia Union and didn't let up, throwing for at least 80 yards in the first quarter in nine of the Warriors' 12 games.

THE RUNNING GAME: Sophomores Eric Deery and Kendrick Williams and R-Fr. Joe Klebon will carry the Warriors' running game this season. Deery and Williams both contributed as true freshmen last season as starting tailback Zach Krise (128.0 ypg through first 3 games) was forced out of the lineup due to injury.

The Warriors averaged 134.8 yards per game on the ground last season, their most since 2005. They ran the ball on 55.2 percent of their offensive plays and averaged 37.1 rushing attempts per game, both the most since 2001.

R-Sr. Brent Jones and Fr. Darius Jackson will be utilized as fullbacks in the Warriors' offense. Jones scored 5 rushing TDs, all on one-yard runs, last season and had 13 carries for 44 yards and 10 catches for 74 yards.

THE WIDE RECEIVERS: ESU returns its top four receivers from last season in R-Sr. Jeff Giglio, R-Sr. Ed Kiser, R-So. Jordan Hallman and So. Bryan Ogden. The quartet had 2,134 yards and 17 TDs last season, accounting for almost 2/3 of the Warriors' 3,246 yards through the air.

ESU led the PSAC in passing efficiency last season (154.6), ranked 2nd in total offense (405.3 ypg) and 3rd in passing offense (270.5 ypg). The Warriors have led the PSAC in passing yards per game in 6 of the last 8 years (2002-06, 2008).

Giglio and Kiser can both reach 2,000 career receiving yards this season. Last year, Sam Shuman became the 8th Warrior with 2,000 receiving yards with a 77-yard TD catch vs. Edinboro in the NCAA Playoffs, and finished his four-year career with 2,043 yards.

• Giglio was 2nd team All-PSAC East and was 6th in Division II with 118.2 yards per game through the first 4 weeks
• Missed 3 of the last 5 games due to injury

IN THE FRONT ROW:
Four of the five starters return on the offensive line, all underclassmen, for the 2010 season. LT Morgan Thomas is the only starter who doesn't return and was 1st team All-PSAC East and 2nd team All-Region last year after starting 42 career games.

The Warriors were 2nd in the PSAC in total offense last season, but also surrendered 41 sacks, the 2nd-most in the conference. R-Sr. QB Matt Marshall ran for 313 yards - 567 gained and 254 lost for a 2.4-yard average on 130 attempts.

THE TIGHT ENDS: R-Sr. Matt Brown, R-Fr. Lukas Mason and true freshmen Nick Hagemann and Steven Jones give the Warriors four tight ends on the roster. Brown, a 6th-year senior, redshirted in 2005 and received a medical redshirt in 2008. He has played in 27 games with 5 starts and has 10 catches for 68 yards in his career at ESU.

CONTROLLING THE CLOCK
• ESU ranked 6th in the PSAC in time of possession last season, averaging 30:09 per game
• First season above 30:00 since 2002, when the Warriors ranked 5th at 31:09

Kicker
• Fr. Taylor Groff has been named the starter and was 1st team All-State at Manheim Central HS, making 11 field goals and 56 extra points
• Sr. Greg Knauss was 1st team All-PSAC East and 2nd team Daktronics All-Region in 2007 and was 25-38 on field goals in 2007-08
• Holds school records with 53-yard field goal (vs. IUP, 2007) and 5 field goals in a game (at West Chester, 2007)
• ESU has had 6 1st team All-PSAC East kickers since 2001

Punter
• Janovic averaged 33.0 yards on 53 punts last year, with a long of 54
• Net punting average (28.3) was 128th in DII (of 148 schools)
• ESU led DII with a 39.7-yard net in 2008 (Nick Krut led DII with 46.0 avg.)
• ESU has had 7 1st team All-PSAC East punters since 1999
• Douds has had 14 1st team kickers and 13 1st team punters in his 36 seasons as head coach at ESU

EILER-MARTIN STADIUM
• Eiler-Martin Stadium has been the home of the Warriors since 1938
• John R. Eiler was an outstanding athlete at the school in the early 1930s and later athletic director and a championship soccer coach
• Gene Martin was the Warriors' head football coach from 1942-57 and the school's long-time Dean of Men

Renovations include:
• New home bleachers were added in 1960
• The current press box was installed in 1988
• The track was resurfaced and expanded to 8 lanes in 2005
• Lights were added prior to the 2007 season
• FieldTurf was installed prior to the 2008 season

The Warriors have a 117-62 record (.654) at Eiler-Martin Stadium under head coach Denny Douds and a 36-19 home record (.655) since 2000.

UNDER THE LIGHTS
• ESU is 4-1 in night games since lights were installed in 2007
• There is only one night game on the 2010 schedule, when the Warriors host IUP on Sept. 11 at 6 p.m.

• ESU is 4-6 all-time in overtime contests and has won its last two games in OT, 27-20 at Kutztown in 2009 and 44-41 vs. Shippensburg in 2008
• The win vs. Shippensburg gave head coach Denny Douds the PSAC record with his 213th career victory

PSAC CHAMPIONSHIPS
• ESU has won a share of nine PSAC titles under head coach Denny Douds, and 12 in school history
• The most recent championships came in 1991, 2002 and 2003, when the Warriors won the PSAC East championship
• Overall PSAC titles came in 1942, 1954, 1964, 1965, 1968, 1975, 1976, 1978 and 1982
• ESU has a 208-100-1 (.675) record in PSAC games for the 3rd-best winning percentage since the first on-the-field title was awarded in 1960

ACADEMIC ACCOLADES
• ESU has produced 10 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District selections in each of the last three years, leading the PSAC in 2007-08 and 2008-09
• 3 student-athletes were Academic All-America selections in 2009-10 — Matt Freed, Toric Robinson (soccer) and Paul Wagner (track & field)
