THE MATCH-UP: East Stroudsburg University travels to Bloomsburg looking for its first win since the 2010 season opener, and its first victory over the Huskies since the NCAA Playoffs in 2005. The Warriors have lost three straight, while Bloomsburg has three straight wins after a season-opening loss at Ashland.
THE SERIES: This weekend's match-up is the 75th between the two schools since ESU's program achieved varsity, four-year status in 1926, with the Warriors holding a 38-34-2 advantage. Bloomsburg lists the series as 43-36-2 in favor of ESU, which includes seven games prior to 1926. ESU's last win was a 52-39 victory at Bloomsburg in the second round of the 2005 NCAA Playoffs, as the Huskies have won the last four meetings and the last five regular season match-ups.
DEMANDING SCHEDULE: Bloomsburg was picked No. 2 in the PSAC East preseason poll and is ESU's fourth straight opponent who was picked in the top two in either division in the preseason rankings. The Warriors took on the preseason favorites in both divisions in back-to-back weeks, falling 45-20 at California and 35-31 vs. West Chester. ESU also lost 23-17 to IUP, the No. 2 pick in the PSAC West.
ESU is playing West Chester and Bloomsburg in consecutive weeks for the 5th straight year and last beat both schools in the same season in 1991, coinciding with ESU's first trip to the NCAA Playoffs.
LAST TIME OUT: The Warriors rallied from a 35-16 deficit with two fourth-quarter touchdowns, but their bid for the go-ahead score ended at the seven-yard line as West Chester held on for a 35-31 win in the PSAC East opener for both schools. R-Sr. QB
Matt Marshall was 30-for-44 for 302 yards and 3 TDs and pulled ESU within 35-29 on a 13-yard TD pass to R-So. WR
Wade Williams with 5:28 remaining. Marshall got the ball back at the 16-yard line with 3:49 left after and drove ESU to a 2nd-and-3 at the 7-yard line, but three straight incompletions turned the ball over on downs with 1:00 left. West Chester ran all but the final five seconds off the clock and took an intentional safety as time expired.
THE HEAD COACHES: Denny Douds (Slippery Rock '63) holds the PSAC record for career wins with a 227-149-3 record in his 37th season as head football coach at ESU. He is in his 45th season at ESU overall and is one of five active coaches in Division II, and one of just 18 coaches in all of college football, with at least 200 career victories. He has led the Warriors to nine PSAC titles and four NCAA Playoff appearances. For more information on Coach Douds and the ESU coaching staff, please see page 12 of the game notes.
Danny Hale (West Chester '68) is 147-50-1 in his 18th season as Bloomsburg's head coach and his 23rd season in the PSAC, including a five-year stint at West Chester. He has led the Huskies to a share of 10 PSAC East championships, was the national runner-up in 2000 and made the national semifinals in 2006.
RIVALRY SATURDAY: In a recent poll on esuwarriors.com, 35 percent of more than 500 participants pegged Bloomsburg as ESU's biggest rival in the PSAC East, edging out West Chester (28 percent) and Kutztown (18 percent).
RECENT HISTORY: Last year's game, a 27-13 win by Bloomsburg, marked the sixth time since 2001 that both schools entered with either 0 or 1 losses. Both programs were among the best in Division II in the 2000's - Bloomsburg was 92-25, and ESU was 77-34.
The Warriors were on the winning side of the ledger three times in the past decade - 52-39 in the 2005 NCAA Playoffs, 30-24 in 2004 and 16-13 in 2002.
