THE SERIES: This will mark the fourth meeting between ESU and C.W. Post since the Pioneers joined the PSAC in 2008, and the 12th overall. The Warriors won the two most notable meetings in 2005, 66-49 in the regular season and 55-28 to claim the Northeast Region championship and a trip to the NCAA semifinals.
THE HEAD COACHES: There have been at least four head coaches at the other 15 PSAC football programs since
Denny Douds (Slippery Rock '63) took over as the Warriors' head coach in 1974. He holds the PSAC record for career wins with a 230-159-3 record in his 38th season as head coach, and has coached 89 more games than the second-most in PSAC history. Including 68 games as an assistant coach under Charlie Reese (1966-73), he has coached in 460 of the 760 games - 60.5 percent - in program history. Douds is 2nd among active Division II coaches and 7th among all active coaches in career victories. He has led the Warriors to 9 PSAC titles and 4 NCAA Playoff appearances. For more, please see page 13 of the game notes.
Bryan Collins (St. John's '87) has a 103-46 record in his 14th season as head coach at C.W. Post and also serves as the Athletic Director. He has led the Pioneers to three NCAA playoff appearances and was the Northeast-10 Coach of the Year four times in 10 seasons before C.W. Post joined the PSAC in 2008. C.W. PLAYING THE BEST: ESU has played the 8th-toughest schedule in Division II this season. The last five opponents - IUP (3-2), California (5-1), West Chester (3-3), Bloomsburg (6-0) and Kutztown (5-1) - have combined for a 22-7 record. The five schools were 40-19 last year - with Cal, Bloom and KU winning 10 games each - and 26-9 in PSAC divisional games.
The Warriors faced three AFCA Top 25 teams in the last four weeks in No. 21 California, No. 5 Bloomsburg and No. 23 Kutztown. They led Cal, 19-14, going into the 4th quarter before the Vulcans hit a 75-yard TD pass on 4th-and-10 with 3:12 left to avoid the upset. They led Bloomsburg, 20-19, going into the 4th but the Huskies pulled it out with two interceptions and TD drives.
BEEN HERE BEFORE: The Warriors are battling through the same schedule they faced last year, when they went 3-8 with five losses by 7 points or less while outscoring opponents by 80 points for the season.
ESU is looking to avoid six-game losing streaks in back-to-back seasons since 1986-87. The Warriors played the same schedule both years, going 0-7 to open 1986 and 1-6 to open 1987.
