EAST STROUDSBURG – East Stroudsburg University head football coach
Denny Douds set the Division II record with his 394th game coached in Millersville's 31-27 win on Saturday at Eiler-Martin Stadium.
Douds, in his 38th season as head coach, passed Jim Malosky of Minnesota-Duluth as the dean of Division II coaches. He has a 230-161-3 record, including nine Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Eastern division titles and four NCAA Playoff appearances, since being named the Warriors' eighth head coach in 1974 following eight years as an assistant.
The Warriors took a 27-24 lead on a 43-yard field goal by sophomore
Taylor Groff with 3:32 remaining, but Millersville returned the ensuing kickoff to midfield and traversed the final 50 yards in eight plays for the game-winning touchdown drive. Dominic Sanders caught a two-yard TD pass from Dan Miller with 17 seconds left, and backup redshirt sophomore quarterback
Nate Daniels took ESU to the Millersville 43-yard line but his final Hail Mary throw into the end zone fell incomplete.
Douds was recognized in a ceremony following the game and was introduced by offensive coordinator
Mike Terwilliger, who was the Warriors' starting quarterback for Douds' first four seasons as head coach and has been an assistant coach for the last 34 seasons. Douds was joined on the field by former players and coaches.
Redshirt senior quarterback
Ray Wagner, Division II's passing leader and the national leader in total offense, was 13-for-24 for 172 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions before leaving the game due to injury after throwing a 12-yard TD pass to sophomore
Dusty Reed that gave ESU a 17-13 lead on the first possession of the third quarter.
Daniels threw a 72-yard TD pass to redshirt junior
Jordan Hallman, who had eight catches for 221 yards and two touchdowns, on his first attempt to put the Warriors ahead 24-14 before the Marauders came back to tie it at 24-all on a 10-yard TD from Miller to Brent Collins with 10:51 left in the fourth quarter.
Daniels was 7-for-10 for 182 yards, a touchdown and an interception as the Warriors' quarterbacks combined for 354 passing yards. Junior tailbacks
Kendrick Williams (15 carries, 57 yards) and
Eric Deery (10 carries, 43 yards) ran for 100 of ESU's 138 rushing yards.
Dan Miller was 13-for-26 for 115 yards, two touchdowns and an interception and ran 15 times for 76 yards for Millersville (3-5, 2-3), which had a 5-2 advantage in turnovers. Sanders had seven catches for 84 yards and Marquis White ran 22 times for 115 yards. The Marauders, who gained 198 yards on the ground, had touchdown drives of 26, 6, 10 and 50 yards.
Douds, 70, owns the PSAC record with 230 career victories and has coached 776 letterwinners, 176 first team All-PSAC selections, 23 AP Little All-Americans, five Harlon Hill Award finalists and a Harlon Hill Award winner in quarterback Jimmy Terwilliger in 2005.
GAME NOTES
* Wagner (172 yards) and Daniels (182 yards) are the second ESU quarterbacks to go over 150 yards passing the same game, both against Millersville. Tim Roken (150) and
Matt Marshall (258) did it in a win at Millersville in 2008 when Roken left in the second quarter due to injury.
* Wagner averaged 381.0 yards passing and 395.3 yards total offense entering the game. He threw touchdown passes of 27 yards to Hallman in the 2nd quarter and 12 yards to Reed in the 3rd quarter. He also ran for 13 yards to finish with 185 yards of total offense in just over a half.
* Hallman is the second ESU receiver with consecutive 200-yard receiving games, joining Mike Mancuso in 1996. Mancuso had 213 yards vs. Cheyney and 216 yards at Mansfield. Hallman had 239 yards vs. C.W. Post and 221 yards vs. Millersville. His 460 yards the last two weeks are the most in school history.
* R-Sr. LT
Zach Sarginger and R-Jr. RT
Wrenton Wright II both made their 30th career starts on the offensive line. R-Sr. C
Dan Caffrey made his 42nd start, R-Jr. RG
Seve Rivers made his 28th start and R-So. LG
Greg Blue made his 15th start. The Warriors have combined for 145 career starts on the offensive line.
* Groff made field goals of 43 yards in the 1st and 4th quarters. He is the first ESU kicker to make two 40-yard field goals in a game since Ed Detwiler made three vs. California in 1992. He is 9-for-10 overall and 5-for-5 over 40 yards this season, including a 52-yarder at Kutztown, the 2nd-longest in school history.
* His 5 field goals of 40+ yards this season are tied for the 2nd-most in a season at ESU. Joey Pingitore made 6 from 40+ yards in 1983.
* His 9 field goals of 40+ yards in his career are also the 2nd-most by an ESU kicker behind Detwiler, who made 12 of his PSAC-record 50 field goals from 40+ yards from 1989-92.
