EAST STROUDSBURG – East Stroudsburg University redshirt senior quarterback
Ray Wagner has been named the PSAC East Co-Offensive Player of the Week after throwing for 522 yards, the sixth-highest total in PSAC history, on Saturday at Kutztown.
Wagner (Harrisburg/Susquehanna Township), who was fifth in Division II with 328.4 passing yards per game entering the week, threw for 330 yards in the first half against the Golden Bears and became the fourth quarterback in school history and 10th in PSAC history to go over the 500-yard mark.
He shares the award with Kutztown running back Josh Mastromatto, who had a 100-yard kick return and 50-yard touchdown run on his way to 291 all-purpose yards in the 49-32 win over the Warriors.
Wagner had 544 of the Warriors' 600 yards of total offense, including five carries for 22 yards and his first career rushing touchdown, to rank fourth in school history and seventh in PSAC history in that category.
The top marks in Division II entering last week were 504 yards passing by Tyler Vanderzee of East Central vs. Northeastern State on Sept. 17, and 492 yards of total offense by Jake Spitzlberger of Nebraska-Kearney vs. Mesa State on Sept. 17.
He was 30-for-50 with two touchdowns and three interceptions, two coming on tipped passes, and helped three Warriors receivers go over the 100-yard mark for just the third time in school history in sophomore
Dusty Reed (eight catches, 118 yards), redshirt sophomore
Robert Bleiler (seven catches, 153 yards) and redshirt junior
Wade Williams (four catches, career-high 140 yards, TD).
Wagner earned his second PSAC East Player of the Week award of the season. He was also recognized after setting school records for passing yards (375) and touchdowns (6) in a half in the first half of the Warriors' 56-14 win over Pace in their season opener.
He leads the PSAC in passing (360.7 yards per game) and total offense (378.3 yards per game) by almost 100 yards per game in both categories. His 2,164 passing yards in the first six games are the most to open a season in school history.
Wagner torched the Kutztown defense with 11 completions of at least 20 yards and seven of at least 30 yards on Saturday. He has 34 completions of at least 20 yards this season, going 141-for-260 with 13 touchdowns and 10 interceptions.
Including his 27-for-52 day for 397 yards last week vs. Bloomsburg, Wagner is 57-for-102 for 919 yards over the last two weeks. Five Warriors have had 100-yard receiving games, all underclassmen – Reed, Bleiler, Williams, redshirt junior
Jordan Hallman and freshman
Ray Dominguez.
