THE MATCH-UP: Head coach Denny Douds, a 1959 graduate of Indiana High School, leads East Stroudsburg University into IUP for the Crimson Hawks' season opener. The game will also mark the head coaching debut of IUP's Curt Cignetti, the oldest son of former head coach Frank Cignetti. Douds was 2-2 against Cignetti's teams in the 1990's, including a 23-12 upset of the No. 1-ranked team in the nation in 1996 at Eiler-Martin Stadium.

ESU is 2-4 at IUP under Douds and most recently made the trip in 2006, falling 35-20 in IUP's first season under Lou Tepper. The Warriors won 33-31 at IUP in 1997. Two of the PSAC's most successful programs met twice for the PSAC championship in 1964 and 1965, with ESU winning both games. Douds came to the Poconos in 1966 as an assistant coach and has remained ever since.

IT STARTS WITH RAY: R-Sr. QB Ray Wagner set three school records in his first career start in Thursday night's 56-14 win over Pace — passing yards (375) and TDs (6) in a half, and single-game pass efficiency rating (321.5). He leads Division II in pass efficiency, ranks 3rd in passing and 6th in total offense (386), and leads the PSAC in all 3 categories. ESU leads DII with 456 passing yards, R-So. WR Robert Bleiler (172) is 5th in receiving yards and So. WR Dusty Reed (136) is 15th. Bleiler and Reed rank 1-2 in the PSAC in receiving.

THE HEAD COACHES: Denny Douds (Slippery Rock '63), who turned 70 in February, holds the PSAC record for career wins with a 230-154-3 record in his 38th season as head football coach at ESU. His 387 games as head coach are 84 more than the second-most in PSAC history. Including 68 games as an assistant coach under Charlie Reese (1966-73), he has coached in 455 of the 755 games - 60.3 percent - in program history.

Douds is in his 46th season at ESU overall and is second among active Division II coaches and seventh among all active college football coaches in career victories. He has led the Warriors to nine PSAC titles and four NCAA Playoff appearances. For more on Coach Douds, please see page 12 of the game notes.

Curt Cignetti (West Virginia '82) came to IUP after four seasons at Alabama, where he was wide receivers coach and helped the Crimson Tide to the 2009 BCS championship. He also spent nine of his first 28 seasons as a college coach at Pittsburgh. Frank Cignetti was 182-50-1 (.783) in 20 seasons from 1986-2005.

He also helped ESU lead the PSAC in kickoff coverage with 11 touchbacks on 65 kickoffs.

WARRIORS RECOGNIZE GARVER, WORTLEY
ESU held a moment of silence for former Warriors Gary Garver and Martin Wortley before the season opener.

Garver, a 3-year letterwinner and the Warriors' top rusher in 1986, was also an assistant coach for 10 seasons from 1990-99. He passed away on August 22 after a 6-month battle with cancer.

Wortley, a 4-year letterwinner on the offensive line, was lost on Sept. 11 in the attack on the World Trade Center. He was a 1995 graduate and worked as an investment rates option broker for Cantor Fitzgerald. ESU will remember Wortley and others at its 9-11 candlelight vigil on Sunday at 8 p.m. on the Linden Quad.

SENIOR QB's STARTING SEASON OPENER
Ray Wagner and Matt Marshall were the first two seniors to start back-to-back season openers since 1980-81. Barry Kennedy was in his 3rd year as a starter in 1980, and Brian Marshall (Matt's father) started 8 games, including the season opener, in 1981.
