EAST STROUDSBURG – East Stroudsburg University student-athletes
Dan Johnson,
Corinne Fitzgerald and
Rose Mascoli have been named to the PSAC Spring Top 10 for academic and athletic achievement during the outdoor track and field season, the conference announced Monday.
The Warriors' trio – all NCAA Division II provisional qualifiers – make ESU the only school in the conference with multiple selections. All three were also named to the Capital One Academic All-America team last week, along with teammate
Ian Melhorn.
This marks the third PSAC Top 10 selection for Mascoli, a junior who was named in Spring 2011 for outdoor track and field and Fall 2011 for cross country. Her three selections are tied for the most in school history.
Johnson, a senior, repeated as a member of the Winter Top 10 during the indoor track and field season. Fitzgerald, a junior, was named to the PSAC Top 10 for the first time in her career.
Mascoli (Lebanon/Lebanon Catholic), an Exercise Science major with a 3.98 grade-point average, was a first team Academic All-American this spring after earning third team status as a sophomore. She scored in three events at the PSAC Outdoor Championships – placing second in the 10K, fourth in the 3K and fifth in the 1500 – and was an NCAA provisional qualifier in the 3K, 5K and 10K. She was an All-American in the 5K and 10K as a sophomore.
Johnson (York/York Suburban), a Sociology major with a 3.82 GPA, was ESU's Men's Senior Scholar-Athlete of the Year and was also named to the Academic All-America first team after becoming the first All-America decathlete in school history. He was the PSAC champion in the heptathlon and decathlon and set school records in both events to finish his career as a six-time NCAA provisional qualifier.
Fitzgerald (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Hills), a Psychology major with a 3.94 GPA, was a national qualifier and the PSAC champion in the 3000m steeplechase as a junior. She also placed third in the 10K after a strong cross country season, where she was also a national qualifier. She was named to the Academic All-America second team this spring.
About the PSAC Top 10
The PSAC Top 10 program recognizes outstanding student-athletes with at least a 3.50 cumulative GPA who are starters or significant contributors for their team. All of the student-athletes selected in the fall, winter and spring seasons are eligible for the PSAC Pete Nevins Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award, which is presented to one male and one female athlete at the conclusion of the academic year.
The Warriors' five Top 10 selections this year – Mascoli in the fall, Johnson in the winter and Fitzgerald, Johnson and Mascoli this spring – are tied for the most in the PSAC with Shippensburg.
ESU has had 11 student-athletes combine for 18 Top 10 honors in the last four years – second-most in the PSAC behind Shippensburg with 20. ESU has had a selection on 10 of the last 11 Top 10 lists.
The Warriors have had 28 student-athletes earn a total of 42 honors, tied for second-most in the 16-school conference, since the PSAC's sports information directors began selecting the lists in 1997-98. Shippensburg leads the way with 49, followed by ESU and Clarion with 42 and Edinboro and Slippery Rock with 40.
ESU (spring 2011-12, spring 2008-09) and Shippensburg (spring 2010-11, winter 2009-10) are the only schools with at least three selections in a season in the last four years.
The men's Spring Top 10 consists of four track and field athletes and Joe Wendle of West Chester, who led the Golden Rams to the NCAA Division II championship. Johnson is joined by Cameron Daugherty (Slippery Rock), the DII champion in the pole vault, Stephen Schelander (Shippensburg), a national qualifier in the 1500, and Tim Lahmers (California).
Fitzgerald and Mascoli are joined by Tabitha Bemis (Edinboro), the PSAC champion in the long jump and triple jump, Samantha Eimers (Mercyhurst), an All-America first baseman in softball, and Kelly Nickerson (Gannon), an All-PSAC selection in golf.
