EAST STROUDSBURG – East Stroudsburg University and the Warriors football program mourn the loss of Derek Brown, a junior linebacker, who died on Thursday from injuries sustained in an automobile accident on Saturday, June 30.

“This is a tragedy of the greatest magnitude,” said ESU head coach Denny Douds. “This is a tremendous loss for his family, community, ESU and the young men in our football program.”

Brown, 20, an Elementary Education major and graduate of Souderton High School, was a two-year letterwinner at outside linebacker and safety for the Warriors.

Derek will continue to give in his passing, as eight organs were donated through the Gift of Life Donor Program, which serves eastern Pennsylvania, southern New Jersey and Delaware.

He is one of eight players from Souderton to play for the Warriors in the last five years. They include his brother, Matt Brown, a four-year letterwinner at tight end in 2006-07 and 2009-10.

He is survived by his parents, Jack and Lillian Kerns, and brothers Matt and Ryan Brown.

Funeral arrangements are being handled by Reed & Steinbach Funeral Home, 2335 Lower State Road, Doylestown, Pa. 18901. In lieu of flowers, contributions will be accepted for a scholarship fund in Derek's honor.

Visitation is scheduled for Monday evening from 5-8 p.m. at the funeral home. A period of visitation will also be held on Tuesday at 10 a.m., prior to the service which will be held at 11 a.m.

Derek played in four games as a true freshman in 2010 before a season-ending injury. He returned to play in 10 games, including nine starts, between linebacker and safety as a sophomore. He was tied for fourth on the team with 73 tackles.

At Souderton, he was an All-Suburban One running back and safety as a three-year letterwinner. He helped Souderton to the league championship as a sophomore.

Brown was one of five players from Souderton on the Warriors' roster in 2011, along with senior linebacker Mike Bergey, redshirt freshman defensive back Andrew Coyle, freshman offensive lineman Nicholas Spause and freshman defensive end Antoine Ray. Other recent Warriors from Souderton are Matt Brown and linebackers Matt Freed (2007-10) and Dave Lotier (2004-07), who was a graduate assistant on the 2010 team.
