EAST STROUDSBURG – Junior forward Jessica Martin had 13 points, 13 rebounds and six blocks and freshman forward Allison Howard had 12 points and 13 rebounds in her first career game, but No. 11-ranked Holy Family held off East Stroudsburg University for a 66-57 win in the Warriors' women's basketball season opener Saturday night at Koehler Fieldhouse.

Carolyn Heston had 13 points and 14 rebounds and Mary Ellen McCollum scored 16 points to lead Holy Family (1-1), which fell 81-68 to No. 1-ranked Bentley in its opener last Saturday. The Tigers are coming off their 10th straight trip to the NCAA Division II Tournament, and barely survived the Warriors' upset bid in last year's opener, pulling out a 53-47 win.

Martin and Howard are the third set of ESU teammates in the last 11 years with double-doubles in the same game – and the first to both post at least 12 points and 12 rebounds.

Martin, a two-time All-PSAC East second team selection, had her 11th career double-double after posting six as a sophomore and four as a freshman. It was her sixth double-double with at least five blocked shots.

Holy Family led 30-19 at halftime, closing the period with a 16-4 run after the Warriors scored nine straight points to go ahead.

It was 42-27 with 15 minutes left after a three-pointer by Maggie Serratelli (12 points), but ESU managed to climb back in it.

The Warriors cut a 47-36 lead to 47-42 with a 6-0 run, on layups by Howard and Martin and two free throws by Howard, but Holy Family point guard Jill Conroy hit a three-pointer with seven minutes left for some breathing room.

After trailing 60-48 with 2:30 left, the Warriors rattled off six straight points on buckets by junior guard Ryann Fiascki and Martin, and two more free throws by Howard, to get within 60-54 with 1:12 remaining.

McCollum scored the next time down for Holy Family, and the Tigers were 4-for-4 from the line down the stretch to seal the win.

Sophomore guard Melissa Poderis was ESU's third-leading scorer with seven points off the bench, and Fiascki had six points and five rebounds. Sophomore guard Helena Gemmell, third in the PSAC with 2.7 steals per game last year, had six steals in 17 minutes.

The Warriors get right into PSAC East play next week, hosting Mansfield at 5:30 p.m. After a trip to Kutztown next Saturday, they are off until the 49th Annual Pocono Classic on November 30-December 1 at Koehler Fieldhouse.
