EAST STROUDSBURG – East Stroudsburg University had 21 steals, 14 blocks and held Cheyney to 23.2 percent shooting to post a 62-47 win in PSAC East women's basketball on Wednesday night at Koehler Fieldhouse.
Sophomore forward
Jessica Martin had 14 points, nine rebounds and three blocks, freshman guard
Helena Gemmell had seven points, seven rebounds and eight steals and freshman center
Michelle Boggs added a career-high six blocks for the Warriors (6-14, 5-11), who ended a five-game losing streak.
The Warriors opened the game on a 15-2 run and led throughout. They were up 23-18 at halftime, and methodically opened the margin in the second half, leading by as many as 21 points.
Kyra Hines-Allen scored a team-high 12 points as Cheyney (1-18, 1-15) was 16-for-69 from the field with 33 turnovers. The Wolves opened 1-for-21 with nine turnovers in the first 11 minutes as the Warriors got out to an early lead.
ESU's 14 blocks are its most in at least 10 seasons, surpassing a 12-block game against Shippensburg on January 26, and its 21 steals are the most since grabbing 23 in a win at Georgian Court two seasons ago.
Freshman guard
Melissa Poderis (seven points) had four steals and Martin added three to go with her three blocked shots. Gemmell came into the night ranked in the top 10 in the PSAC in steals and has 46 in 18 games this season.
Sophomore guard
Ryann Fiascki scored seven points, sophomore forward
Kelsey Murray had six and junior guard
Andrea Veres added five for ESU, which scored more than 60 points for the first time since a 66-59 win at Mansfield on January 16.
ESU led 1-0 on a free throw by Martin, trailed 2-1 after a bucket by Christina Jordan, then ripped off 14 straight points over the next eight minutes. Martin scored the first six, including a three-pointer, followed by a steal and layup by Gemmell, a bucket by Murray assisted by Veres, and back-to-back baskets by Fiascki (including a three) to push the lead to 15-2.
Cheyney managed to close it to five (23-18) at the half, but an 8-0 run by the Warriors early in the second half helped give them some breathing room. It was 34-28 with 13 minutes left but Poderis hit a three and Gemmell had another steal and layup, and ESU began to pull away. The largest lead (59-38) came with just under three minutes left after a Poderis steal and layup.
ESU, which has a three-game lead over Mansfield for the sixth and final spot in the PSAC East with six games remaining, hosts Kutztown (11-9, 9-7) on Saturday at Koehler Fieldhouse.
