EAST STROUDSBURG – East Stroudsburg University senior Matt Tholis has been named to the PSAC Top 10 for athletic and academic achievement for the Spring 2013 sports season, the conference announced Monday.

Tholis (Belle Mead, N.J./Montgomery), an Exercise Science major with a 3.91 grade-point average, was the national runner-up in the javelin at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Championships last month.

He hit a mark of 232-0, a school record and the 12th-best mark in Division II history, on May 25 at Colorado State-Pueblo. He also won the PSAC championship at 223-11 and had an NCAA automatic qualifying mark of 226-5 on March 30 at Lafayette.

He has received every major conference and regional field athlete award for the 2013 season – the PSAC Men's Field Athlete of the Year, PSAC Championship Field Athlete of the Meet and the USTFCCCA Atlantic Region Men's Field Athlete of the Year.

Tholis was also named to the Capital One Academic All-District team earlier this month and is on the national ballot for Academic All-America honors.

He earned his second career All-America citation after finishing seventh in DII during the 2012 outdoor season. He was previously an NCAA Division III national qualifier at Rowan in 2010 before transferring to ESU.

The PSAC Top 10 program recognizes outstanding student-athletes with at least a 3.50 cumulative grade-point average who are starters or significant contributors for their team.

All of the student-athletes selected in the fall, winter and spring seasons are eligible for consideration for the PSAC Pete Nevins Scholar-Athlete of the Year, which is presented to one male and one female athlete at the conclusion of the academic year.

Tholis was ESU's second PSAC Top 10 selection this year, joining junior men's soccer standout Khriswayne Wallace.

This year's Spring Top 10 includes 10 student-athletes from eight schools.

The other four members of the men's Top 10 list are track & field athletes Aaron Dinzeo (California) and Kevin Jewel (Slippery Rock), baseball player Pat Kregeloh (Shippensburg) and golfer Jacob Pilarski (Mercyhurst).

The women's team features four track & field athletes, including by Brenae Edwards (Mansfield), the NCAA DII champion in the 10,000m. She is joined by Tabitha Bemis and Sarah Krolick of Edinboro, Erin Kling (California) and tennis player Ridhima Borooah (Kutztown).

The Warriors have had 30 student-athletes earn a total of 44 honors, third-most in the 16 school conference, since the PSAC's sports information directors began selecting the lists in 1997-98.

ESU's 21 selections in the last six years are second in the conference, trailing only Shippensburg (24).
