EAST STROUDSBURG – East Stroudsburg University placed 160 student-athletes on the PSAC Scholar-Athlete list for the 2012-13 academic year, the conference announced Wednesday.
The PSAC recognized a total of 2,200 student-athletes from its 16 member institutions on this year's list, representing 35 percent of the total student-athlete population. Last year, 2,176 student-athletes, 35 percent of the total population, were recognized.
Student-athletes must maintain at least a 3.25 cumulative grade-point average while competing in an intercollegiate varsity sport to be eligible for PSAC Scholar-Athlete status.
ESU had 36 percent of its 447 student-athletes recognized on the squad. The Warriors previously had 153 student-athletes recognized last year, 145 in 2010-11, 156 in 2009-10, 131 in 2008-09 and 123 in 2007-08.
ESU's list includes the male recipient of the PSAC's Pete Nevins Scholar-Athlete of the Year award in senior
Matt Tholis, which was announced on Tuesday. The award, in its 23rd year, was renamed in 2007 to honor Nevins, ESU's sports information director from 1969 to 2002, who passed away earlier that year.
Tholis was the PSAC champion and NCAA Division II runner-up in the javelin while maintaining a 3.91 GPA in Exercise Science. He was one of two ESU student-athletes named to the PSAC Top 10 this year along with junior
Khriswayne Wallace (men's soccer).
Earlier Wednesday, Tholis was one of three Warriors named to the Capital One Academic All-America first team in track & field/cross country, along with seniors
Corinne Fitzgerald and
Rose Mascoli.
The Warriors produced a school-record eight Academic All-Americans this year, second-most in the PSAC. Joining Tholis, Fitzgerald and Mascoli are Wallace (men's soccer), senior
Eric Boyer (baseball), junior
Rebecca Smith (softball), redshirt junior
Brendan McKeown (men's at-large/wrestling) and senior
Rabecca Lausch (women's at-large/tennis).
ESU had 11 Academic All-District selections in the eight student-athletes listed above, along with senior
Sarah Garman (women's soccer), senior
Jennifer Denaro (softball) and redshirt junior
Braden Turner (men's at-large/wrestling).
