Jamal Nwaniemeka scored a season-high 25 points as East Stroudsburg University ran past Cheyney for a 90-73 win in PSAC East men's basketball on Wednesday night at Cope Hall.
Senior guards
Matt Tobin and
Whis Grant scored 17 and 16 points respectively for ESU (10-5, 8-3), which hosts West Chester (7-10, 5-6) on Saturday in a rematch of ESU's 92-80 victory in last year's PSAC championship game.
Grant set ESU's record for career three-pointers (239), hitting three to surpass the record of 236 set by Andy Heimbach (2006-10). Grant tied the record in a win over PSU-Lehigh Valley on Saturday.
ESU led 51-29 at halftime, scoring 26 points in the final six minutes of the first half. Nwaniemeka (16) and Tobin (11) both hit double figures in the opening period. Tobin's 17 points were a season-high.
Kevin Larkin scored 16 points to lead Cheyney (1-15, 0-11). The Warriors won their 12th straight against the Wolves since the start of the 2009-10 season.
Nwaniemeka shot 8-for-13 from the field and 9-for-11 at the foul line for ESU's top scoring game this season. He finished two points off his career-high of 27 points against West Chester in last year's PSAC championship game.
Junior forward
Wes Cherry added 11 points off the bench, including nine in a frantic 26-15 run in the final six minutes of the first half.
The Warriors led by at least 20 throughout most of the second half. Cheyney closed the margin to 86-73 in the final minute before ESU scored the last four points.
Redshirt senior forward
Muhamadou Kaba had five points and grabbed a career-high 11 rebounds as ESU held a 44-34 advantage on the glass.
ESU maintains a half-game lead over Kutztown (11-7, 8-4) for the top spot in the PSAC East at the midway point of the conference schedule.
Wednesday night's game was the first of 12 games against the PSAC East to close the regular season. ESU also has a non-conference game at defending East region champion Southern Connecticut State on February 11.
