EAST STROUDSBURG - Ryan Zapoticky converted a two-point conversion pass to Jordan Harro for the game's final points as Shippensburg outlasted East Stroudsburg University, 69-67 (5OT), in PSAC East football on Saturday night at Eiler-Martin Stadium.

After playing to a 41-41 tie in regulation, Ship outscored ESU 28-26 through the five OT periods to prevail.

Redshirt senior quarterback Matt Soltes threw for 594 yards, tied a PSAC record with nine passing TD and gained 616 yards of total offense for ESU (2-3, 1-1). Soltes set an NCAA Division II record for career games with 500 yards total offense (6) and tied a record for games with 600 yards total offense (2).

Redshirt senior wide receiver Jon Schnaars set PSAC records for receptions (20) and touchdowns (7), including three of ESU's four TD in the overtime sessions. Schnaars gained 218 yards receiving.

Senior wide receiver Gerard Wendowski had 10 catches for 222 yards and two TD, including the game-tying score in the second OT.

Redshirt junior tailback Robert Healy had 204 yards from scrimmage, rushing for 71 yards and catching nine passes for 133 yards.

Zapoticky threw for 320 yards and six TD and ran for 103 yards for Ship (3-2, 1-1). Justin Pyle ran for 98 yards and three TD and added five catches for 36 yards and a score. Sheldon Mayer had two catches for 69 yards and two TD.

The five OT periods were one short of the NCAA Division II record in a game in which both teams were DII members. St. Joseph's (Ind.) beat Fairmont State 19-11 in 2006, and Adams State beat Nebraska-Kearney 55-48 in 6OT in 1998.

The 136 total points are the second-most in PSAC history behind West Liberty's 84-63 win vs. Edinboro (147 points) in the NCAA DII Playoffs in 2009.

Soltes (9) and Zapoticky (6) combined to set a DII record for most combined TD passes in a game with 15. The previous mark of 14 was set by North Park (11) and North Central (3) in October 1968.

ESU led 27-0 midway through the second quarter and 41-14 with 5:03 left in the third quarter, before Shippensburg scored four TD to tie the game at 41-41 on a seven-yard TD pass from Zapoticky to Mike Brown with 52 seconds remaining.

Redshirt junior defensive end Ahmad McFarland blocked the extra point by Billy Deane to maintain the tie. ESU drove to the Ship 22-yard line, but Soltes' pass for Schnaars was intercepted by Will Hudson at the goal line with 18 seconds remaining in regulation.

1st OT - Soltes completed to Healy for 14 yards, was sacked for a loss of 10 yards, hit Wendowski for 17 yards and Schnaars for a 4-yard TD on 3rd-and-goal.  PAT by Fr. K Nicolas Ruiz was good.  (ESU leads 48-41)

Zapoticky completed to Harro for 7 yards on 4th-and-4 from the 19. On 4th-and-9 from the 11, he hit Paryss Marshall for the TD. PAT by Billy Deane was good. (Tied 48-48)

2nd OT - ESU penalty gives Ship 1st down at the 15-yard line. Zapoticky hit Marshall for 12 yards, and Pyle scored a 3-yard TD on the next play. PAT by Deane was good.  (Ship leads 55-48)

Soltes completed to Healy for 12 yards, then hit Wendowski for a 13-yard TD on 2nd-and-10. PAT by Ruiz was good.  (Tied 55-55)

3rd OT - Soltes completed to Healy for 22 yards, then hit Schnaars for the 3-yard TD and a 2-play scoring drive.  Soltes 2-point pass attempt failed.  (ESU leads 61-55)

Zapoticky ran for 16 yards, then 5 yards to the 4-yard line, setting up 2nd-and-goal. After 2 incomplete passes, he hit Mike Brown for a 4-yard TD.  Zapoticky completed pass on 2-point conversion but R-Jr. LB Eric Pabst stopped the receiver at the 1-yard line.  (Tied 61-61)

4th OT - Zapoticky's 1st-down pass was intercepted by So. S Marc Gaudet in the end zone.  ESU takes over and can win the game with a score.

Healy ran for 5 yards, then an apparent 20-yard TD on 3rd-and-5 which was nullified by an illegal formation penalty. On 3rd-and-10 from the 25, Soltes' pass for Schnaars was incomplete. Ruiz's 42-yard field goal was short. (Tied 61-61)

5th OT - Ship pass interference penalty on 2nd-and-10 gives ESU 1st-and-goal at the 10. After incomplete passes to Healy and Wendowski, Soltes hit Schnaars for a 10-yard TD. An unsportsmanlike conduct penalty moved the 2-point try to the 18-yard line. Soltes' pass failed.  (ESU leads 67-61)

Zapoticky ran for 7 yards on 3rd-and-5. He ran for 6 yards to the 7-yard line, and completed to Mike Brown for 6 yards to the 1. Pyle ran for no gain, and then scored on 2nd-and-goal. Zapoticky's 2-point pass to Harro was converted.

The five-overtime game is the longest for both schools. ESU had played one two-overtime game, a 33-27 loss at Shepherd in 2009. Ship had also played one two-OT game, losing 44-43 at West Chester in 2010.

ESU gained 693 total yards on 107 offensive plays (594 passing, 99 rushing), with Soltes going 40-for-70 through the air to set school records for completions and attempts.

Schnaars had four TD catches in the first 23 minutes of the game to give ESU a 27-0 lead. He caught TD passes of 13 and three yards in the first quarter, and 11 and 24 yards in the second quarter.

Ship pulled within 27-14 at halftime on a 66-yard run by Pyle and a 25-yard TD pass from Zapoticky to Pyle.

The Warriors rebuilt their 27-point lead in the third quarter as Soltes threw a 16-yard TD to Wendowski and redshirt senior tailback Gerald Van De Cruz scored on a one-yard run to make it 41-14 with 5:03 left in the third.

Ship scored two plays later on a 61-yard TD from Zapoticky to Mayer, and pulled within 41-28 with 52 seconds left in the third as Zapoticky hit Mayer for an eight-yard TD after an interception and return by Chad Miller.

Ship made it 41-35 on its first drive of the fourth quarter, going 76 yards on 10 plays capped by a 22-yard rushing TD by Andrew Smith.

ESU punted twice and Ship punted once before taking over at its 12-yard line with 3:51 remaining. Zapoticky went 88 yards in 10 plays, including a 19-yard pass to Smith on third-and-13 at the ESU 30, and completed a seven-yard TD pass to Mike Brown with 52 seconds left.

After an ESU timeout, McFarland blocked the extra point to keep the score at 41-41.

Soltes hit Schnaars for 41 yards to the Ship 36 on the Warriors' first play of their ensuing drive. He found Healy for seven yards and Schnaars for seven to move the ball to the Ship 22 with 27 seconds left, but Hudson had an interception at the goal line to force overtime.
