Bloomsburg Tops ESU Women’s Basketball, 73-52

BLOOMSBURG - East Stroudsburg University led 30-27 at halftime before Bloomsburg pulled away for a 73-52 win in PSAC East women's basketball on Tuesday night at Nelson Field House.

Mia Hopkins had 24 points, 11 rebounds, six assists and four steals for Bloomsburg (5-1, 2-1), which has won five straight PSAC East regular season titles.

Junior forward Allison Howard scored 15 of her 17 points in the first half for ESU (1-6, 0-4).

Senior center Michelle Boggs had eight points and nine rebounds, sophomore guard Imani Brown scored seven points, senior guard Tyeca Reviere had five points and eight rebounds, senior guard Melissa Poderis had four points, four rebounds and four assists and junior guard Rachel Falkowski had four points and six rebounds for the Warriors.

Howard scored five points in a 7-0 run to stake the Warriors to a 22-18 lead midway through the second quarter, and hit a three-pointer to cap a 6-0 run to close the first half and give ESU its halftime lead over the Huskies.

Bloomsburg shot 55.2 percent (16-for-29) in the second half, scoring 46 points, including a 25-10 margin in the third quarter.

Hopkins, third in the PSAC in scoring and first in rebounding, was joined in double figures by Morgan Klunk (15 points) and Alex Ross (13 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists) for Bloomsburg. Hopkins scored 14 points, Ross 10 and Klunk nine after intermission.

Howard (14.4 ppg) led ESU in scoring for the second straight game and the fourth time in seven games this season. She went over the 600-point mark for her career.

ESU held a 48-39 rebounding edge, but Bloomsburg had a 21-14 advantage in turnovers and outscored the Warriors 19-4 at the foul line.

Bloomsburg won its 14th straight in the series since the start of the 2009-10 season.

ESU head coach Diane Decker was an assistant under BU head coach Bill Cleary the last seven seasons, helping the Huskies to five PSAC East titles, four NCAA DII Tournaments and the 2013 PSAC tournament championship. ESU assistant coach Marla Simmons was last year's PSAC East Athlete of the Year for Bloomsburg.

ESU hosts Edinboro (7-2, 3-1) on Friday at 5:30 p.m. and Mercyhurst (3-5, 2-2) on Saturday at 2 p.m. in a pair of home games this weekend at Koehler Fieldhouse.
