Matt Tobin has been named the Lehigh Valley Small College Basketball Organization's Pete Nevins Player of the Year for the second straight year, it was announced Tuesday at a media luncheon in Center Valley.
Tobin (Hopatcong, N.J./Hopatcong) is the first repeat selection since Kutztown's Dave Ben was recognized three straight years (2006-07 through 2008-09). Muhlenberg's Mark Lesko was also a repeat pick in 2000-01 and 2001-02.
Last year, Tobin joined teammate
Whis Grant (2012-13) and Rich Baker (2003-04) as ESU players to be selected as Player of the Year.
Senior forward
Jessica Martin (Brownstown, Pa./Conestoga Valley) was ESU's selection for the women's player of the year award for the third straight year. The women's Pete Nevins Player of the Year was Muhlenberg senior forward Leanna Tallamy.
The Player of the Year award was renamed in 2007 in honor of Pete Nevins, ESU's sports information director from 1969-2002 and the founder of the small college basketball organization.
There were 13 players selected on the organization's "Team of the Year", which recognizes a men's and women's player from each of the six area schools, plus the Cedar Crest women's program.
Joining Tobin on the men's team were Delaware Valley's Francis Arnold, Kutztown's Tyler Brooks, DeSales' Cody Deal, Moravian's Izel Dickerson and Muhlenberg's Malique Killing.
Martin and Tallamy were joined on the women's team by Kutztown's Advia Campbell, Delaware Valley's Brenna Coll, Cedar Crest's Breonna Lewis, DeSales' Morgan McCollian and Moravian's Alexis Wright.
Tobin became the first player in ESU history, and 11th in PSAC history, with 1,000 career points and 500 assists on Saturday against Cheyney. He went over the 1,000-point mark (1,005) and has a school-record 518 career assists. He is the first PSAC player to reach 1,000 points and 500 assists since Edinboro's Adam Kaufman in 2001.
Tobin is averaging 9.1 points per game and leads the PSAC in assists (6.3) and assist-to-turnover ratio (2.6) for the second straight year. He is second in steals (2.5) after leading the conference last season, when he was named first team All-PSAC East.
A four-year letterwinner and three-year starter at point guard, ESU is 68-17 overall (47-10 PSAC) with Tobin as the lead guard and is seeking its third straight PSAC East regular season title. The Warriors are 16-8 (14-5), holding a 1.5-game lead over West Chester and Kutztown (both 12-7) entering the final three games of the regular season.
Tobin had 205 assists, second-most in ESU history, on last year's historic 30-2 team that won the Warriors' second PSAC championship in three years and advanced to the NCAA DII regional final for the second time in program history.
Defensively, Tobin ranks fifth at ESU with 187 career steals.
Tobin has 352 assists in the last two years, 80 more than the next closest player in the PSAC (IUP's Devante Chance), and 129 steals, 17 more than Gannon's Adam Blazek.
Tobin and senior forward
Lamont Tillery will play their 118th career games on Wednesday at West Chester, tying Duane Johnson and Terrance King (2009-13) for the most in program history.
Martin, a three-time All-PSAC East selection, can become the third ESU women's player to earn four straight all-conference honors in early March. She was a member of the first team last season.
Martin is averaging 11.5 points, 7.0 rebounds and 2.3 blocks (2nd in the PSAC) for ESU (10-13, 9-10), which currently holds a one-half game lead for fourth in the PSAC East with three games remaining. The top six teams in the nine-team division advance, with the No. 3 and No. 4 seeds hosting first-round playoff games on February 28.
Martin enters this week with 1,153 career points (10th at ESU), 810 rebounds (5th) and 261 blocks, an ESU record and fifth-most in PSAC history. She recorded her 25th career double-double on Saturday against Cheyney.
She was the PSAC East Freshman of the Year in 2012, setting a conference freshman record with 76 blocked shots and an ESU freshman record with 195 rebounds. She is a three-time MVP of the Pocono Classic and a two-time PSAC East Athlete of the Week selection.
