Alex Zubko has been named the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference "Champion Scholar" for men's outdoor track and field, it was announced on Saturday at the PSAC Championships at Eiler-Martin Stadium.
Zubko (Dallas, Pa./Dallas) has a 3.93 grade-point average as an Exercise Science major at ESU and is the student-athlete with the top GPA at the championship site.
Zubko was a PSAC qualifier in the 10,000m, placing 11th in the final (32:59.85) on Thursday night at ESU. He had a PSAC qualifying time of 32:32.86 in the season opener at Washington & Lee on March 20, easily eclipsing the qualifying standard of 33:00.
He is the second ESU student-athlete to be named a PSAC Champion Scholar this academic year, joining Dan Ingulli (wrestling). He is the fifth ESU student-athlete overall, along with Ingulli (2014-15, wrestling), Joseph Hoy (2013-14, wrestling), Tony Vorndran (2012-13, wrestling) and Lisa Lower (2011, cross country).
The PSAC Champion Scholar Awards are modeled after the NCAA's Elite 88 award and honors the student-athlete with the top GPA who is competing at the site of each of the PSAC's 23 championship finals. The awards are in their fourth year.
The selection criteria for the Champion Scholar Awards is identical to that of the NCAA Elite 88 awards, which honor the student-athlete with the top GPA at each of the championship finals sites of the 88 NCAA championships across all three divisions - I, II and III.
