BETHLEHEM - Sophomore Aspen Gaita set a PSAC record in the 60m hurdles (8.59), tied East Stroudsburg University's indoor long jump record (18-1) and posted ESU's No. 2 pentathlon score (3,534), an NCAA Division II provisional mark, in her debut for the Warriors on Friday night at Lehigh.

Gaita, a transfer from Kent State and the daughter of ESU assistant coach Karen Way Gaita '91, the 1991 NCAA DII outdoor high jump champion as a senior, opened her ESU career with the school record in the 60m hurdles and finished the night just 60 points shy of the school pentathlon record.

She broke the ESU 60m hurdles mark by 35-hundredths of a second, shattering the record of 8.94 set by Lauren Ventrella in 2010, and broke the PSAC record of 8.60 set by Andi Rose (Slippery Rock) in 2007 and tied by Tabitha Bemis (Edinboro) in both 2013 and 2014.

Her time of 8.59 is well under the NCAA DII provisional standard of 8.84.

In her fourth event, she tied the long jump record (18-1) set in 2007 by Leslie Martin, a three-time NCAA qualifier.

She posted a mark of 5-2 1/2 in the high jump, 29-1 1/4 in the shot put and concluded with a time of 2:33.12 in the 800m.

Martin holds the school record in the pentathlon at 3,594 points. Gaita edged the previous No. 2 effort (3,519) recorded by two-time PSAC multi champion Trina Carito in 2011.

Gaita paced a field of 14 entrants, with Villanova's Sofia Calabrese second (3,140) and Stockton's Joanna Carluccio third (2,866).

As a freshman at Kent State last year, Gaita was sixth in the Mid-American Conference (MAC) in the pentathlon with a PR of 3,417.
