EAST STROUDSBURG – East Stroudsburg University senior
Steve Morgan was announced as the PSAC Men's Outdoor Track Athlete of the Year on Friday afternoon, as the league office revealed its major award winners for the 2017 track & field season.
Morgan (Egg Harbor, N.J./Egg Harbor Township) capped off a stellar ESU career with an 11th place finish in the 110-meter hurdles at this year's NCAA Division II Outdoor Championships in May. That result earned him second team All-America accolades and made him the 19th multiple-time All-American in ESU men's history.
This is the second major PSAC award for Morgan, as he was previously named the conference's Outdoor Freshman of the Year in 2014 after claiming his first of four consecutive PSAC titles in the 110m hurdles. Morgan is the first in men's program history to win four straight championships in a single event, and his six overall PSAC titles rank him third all-time at ESU.
Earlier this year, Morgan placed ninth in the 60m hurdles at the DII Indoor Championships to achieve second team All-America status for the first time. He posted NCAA DII provisional standards in the hurdles in seven out of eight possible seasons during his time as a Warrior, and he became the eighth in team history to reach the DII indoor and outdoor championships within the same season in 2017.
ESU's men's track & field program has now received at least one major award from the PSAC in eight of the last nine years. Morgan joins former standout Negus Graham (2010, 2011) as the only two Warriors to be named the PSAC Men's Outdoor Track Athlete of the Year.
Morgan's 11th place showing nationally in the 110m hurdles was tied for the highest by a PSAC men's track athlete at the outdoor championships. He earned that spot after crossing the line in a time of 14.23 which was 0.09 quicker than his previous school record mark of 14.32.
Other highlights for Morgan in 2017 included his second-career PSAC indoor title in the 60m hurdles in February and a school-record performance in the shuttle hurdles at the historic Penn Relays. Morgan, junior
Christian Castro, sophomore
Akeim Thomas and sophomore
Mike Matrisciano established the new shuttle hurdles program mark on their way to a first place finish in the Championship of America race.
