EAST STROUDSBURG – East Stroudsburg University graduate student
Alex Zubko was one of a select group of student-athletes to earn a spot on the 2017 PSAC Spring Top 10 list revealed by the conference office on Tuesday afternoon.
Five males and five females from the PSAC's 18 institutions were honored on the prestigious list, which recognizes both athletic and academic accomplishments. Student-athletes must have a minimum 3.50 cumulative grade-point average and noteworthy athletic credentials to be eligible for nomination.
Zubko (Dallas, Pa./Dallas) maintains a 4.0 grade-point average as a graduate student working towards his master's degree in exercise science. As an undergrad, he registered a 3.95 GPA while earning a B.S. in exercise science.
This is the latest in a string of awards for Zubko during his time at ESU. He recently became the 12th Warrior in school history to be named a three-time CoSIDA Academic All-District selection. Zubko added first team CoSIDA Academic All-America accolades in 2016 and third team Academic All-America honors in 2015, with All-America selections for the current year set to be announced later this week.
Zubko was also named the PSAC Outdoor Champion Scholar in 2015. He earned second team All-PSAC status in each of his final two cross country seasons at ESU, placing 27th in a field of over 130 runners in both 2015 and 2016. Zubko was the top finisher for the Warriors during the 2015 PSAC meet.
Regionally, Zubko was ESU's No. 2 finisher at the NCAA DII Atlantic race last fall, and he added a 33rd place showing at the regional competition in 2015.
On the track this spring, Zubko was the lone Warrior to post PSAC qualifying times in both the 5,000 and 10,000-meter distances. He registered a season-best 5K effort of 15:19.22 at ESU's All-American meet, while his top 10K time of 32:35.64 came in the outdoor season opener at Charlotte in March. Zubko managed PSAC qualifying times in the 10K in each of his four seasons at ESU. He also had the Warriors' top time in the 3K (9:02.98) during the 2017 outdoor season.
ESU's men's track & field program has now had six selections to the PSAC Spring Top 10 list in the past nine seasons. The Warriors have had 35 student-athletes earn a total of 51 honors overall since the PSAC's sports information directors began selecting the lists in 1997-98. That figure is the fourth-highest among the conference's 18 institutions.
During the 2016-17 academic year, ESU's three Top 10 selections were tied for the third-most in the conference. Redshirt junior Devon Ackerman (football) and senior Emily Howell (field hockey) were each recognized on the 2016 Fall Top 10 list.
