EAST STROUDSBURG – Senior guard
Imani Brown totaled 30 points and 10 rebounds, and junior guard
Noelle Powell added 15 points off the bench as East Stroudsburg University topped Cheyney by a 79-70 final at Koehler Fieldhouse on Saturday.
The Warriors (12-6, 10-4 PSAC) won their sixth-straight game at home, and they have now bested the Wolves (5-15, 3-11 PSAC) in 13 consecutive meetings dating back to 2011.
Brown reached 30 points for a third time this season, while the double-double was her fourth of the season and eighth overall in her ESU career. She hit 12 of 19 shots from the field and 4 of 5 free throw attempts. Powell, meanwhile, went 4 for 5 from 3-point range to finish two points shy of her season-high set against Pitt-Johnstown on Nov. 19.
One of Powell's 3-pointers capped an 11-0 run for ESU in the opening quarter to give the home side a 14-6 advantage. The Warriors had another extended run of 9-0 early in the second to up their lead to 27-13, and they maintained a 41-32 edge at the end of the half.
Cheyney pulled within six points on three separate occasions in the third quarter, the last of which had the score at 55-49 with 3:08 left on the clock. ESU used a 7-2 run, highlighted by a layup and three blocks by freshman forward
Kaitlyn Swint, to restore its double-digit lead heading into the fourth quarter, and the Wolves never got closer than nine points for the remainder of the contest.
Swint, who was pressed into action after an early injury to sophomore center
Alison Bauman, responded with a season-high seven points on 3 of 6 shooting off the bench. Her three blocks matched a season-high, and she now has nine rejections in her five appearances on the year.
After shooting under 30 percent from the floor in Wednesday's road loss at Millersville, the Warriors were back up to 43.7 percent in today's victory, and they also committed only 11 turnovers compared to 18 giveaways for the visitors.
Brown's 30 points came in 31 minutes of game action, as she finished only five points away from her season and career-high total of 35 set in a Dec. 30 overtime victory over Mansfield. She also dished out a team-high four assists to lead the team in points, rebounds and assists for a third time this season. Brown has accomplished the feat four times in the past two years; no other ESU player has done so since 2013.
With the victory, ESU remains a game and a half behind West Chester (15-4, 12-3) for first place in the PSAC East standings. The Warriors will look to snap a three-game losing streak on the road on Wednesday, when they travel to Shippensburg for a matchup scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
Notes:
Brown drilled a pair of 3-pointers on Saturday to give her a total of 127 for her ESU career. She now has sole possession of third place in the program's all-time rankings.
Freshman guard
Abby Schoffstall earned her first-career collegiate start on Saturday. She finished with three points, two assists and a steal in nine minutes of game action.
