EAST STROUDSBURG – East Stroudsburg University's men's track & field team won 10 of 19 contested events in a dominant performance at the 19th annual DeSchriver Invitational on Saturday.
Eight of those first-place finishes came on the track, while sophomore
Austin Horner (long jump) and freshman
Dominic Walton (shot put) added victories in the field. ESU also added 11 new PSAC-qualifying marks and three season-bests which topped previous PSAC qualifications.
The Warriors went 1-2-3 in a pair of track events, including the first contested race of the day. Senior
Dan Buccino grabbed first place in the 5000m with a time of 15:42.90. He was followed by freshman
Teddy Mostellar (15:45.61) in second, junior
Tom Ciaccio (15:46.61) in third and freshman
Casey Ellis (15:57.44) in sixth. All four were under the PSAC standard of 16:00.17.
Later on, junior
Khai Samuels (1:24.01), sophomore
Andrew Schumacher (1:26.18) and freshman
Jordan Cruise (1:27.16) claimed the top three spots in the 600m. Samuels was just off his PR of 1:23.37 which ranks No. 2 all-time in ESU history. Schumacher moves into the program record books at No. 7 all-time, while Cruise's time ranks 10th historically.
Other individual wins on the track included senior
Christian Castro (7.62) in the 55m hurdles, junior
Pat Monahan (6.55) in the 55m dash and senior
Jeremy Rigotti (8:57.08) in the 3000m. Monahan and Rigotti both bettered previous PSAC qualifying efforts, while Castro registered a new PSAC mark. The Warriors ended up with three new conference times in the hurdles, with junior
Mike Matrisciano (8.11) and Horner (8.18) following Castro in fourth and fifth place, respectively.
Horner took first place in the long jump with a season-best effort of 22-5. Sophomore
Darnell Randall was close behind in second with a new PSAC-qualifying distance of 22-3 1/2. Walton, meanwhile, bested 55 competitors in the shot put with a top toss of 51-2 3/4.
Sophomores
Mike Sheptuk (1:59.70) and
Andrew Lopez (1:59.82) qualified for PSAC's while placing second and third in the 800m, while freshman
Jordan Duncan-Murphy (23.15) booked his spot at the conference meet after ranking second out of 53 runners in the 200m.
ESU swept the three contested relays. Castro, freshman
Mike Simonson, freshman
Omari Slocombe and Monahan began the morning with a time of 1:30.73 in the 4x200m relay. That mark is No. 4 all-time in program history.
Sophomore
Matt Lloyd, freshman
Nick Fanelle, Samuels and Cruise (8:00.09) were first in the 4x800m, and Duncan-Murphy, Schumacher, Horner and Sheptuk topped the field in the 4x400m.
Some members of the track & field team will have next weekend off. Others will travel to Staten Island on Friday to take part in the Fast Track National Qualifier.
