EAST STROUDSBURG – The PSAC revealed its indoor track & field major award winners on Thursday, with East Stroudsburg University sweeping the top track accolades. Senior
Christian Castro was honored as the men's Indoor Track Athlete of the Year, while junior
Aspen Gaita took home the same award on the women's side.
Gaita (Stroudsburg, Pa./Stroudsburg) becomes the first ESU woman to be honored as the PSAC's top indoor track athlete. She excelled on both the track and the field this winter, with her season capped by a sixth place finish in the pentathlon at the NCAA Division II Indoor Championships.
Gaita finished with an ESU record total of 3,786 points at nationals to earn first team All-America accolades and become the 10th multiple time All-American in program history. She added a 13th place individual showing in the 60-meter hurdles, finishing one spot out of second team All-America status.
At PSAC's, Gaita scored 24 points for the Warriors, with a majority of those points coming on the track. She was the runner-up in the 60m hurdles, fourth in the 200m and fourth in the long jump individually. Gaita also teamed with sophomore
Sarah Klag, sophomore
Allyson Stitzer and junior
Shante Dorin for a third-place result in the 4x400m relay.
Indoors, Gaita is the ESU record holder in the 55m hurdles (7.99), 60m hurdles (8.54), long jump (18-10 3/4) and pentathlon (3,786). She also holds outdoor school records in the 100m hurdles (13.94) and long jump (19-0).
Castro (Vineland, N.J./Vineland) is the first ESU man to be named PSAC Indoor Track Athlete of the Year since Negus Graham in 2011. He placed in the top five individually in three sprint events at the conference championships, with his weekend highlighted by a PSAC title in the 60m hurdles. Castro also took third in the 200m and fifth in the 60m.
Entering the 2017-18 indoor season, Castro had scored four times at PSAC's in his collegiate career, with his top previous result a fifth place showing at the 2017 outdoor championships in 110m hurdles. He nearly doubled that previous scoring output this winter.
Castro just missed out on a qualifying spot for the DII Indoor Championships in the 60m hurdles, as his PR time of 8.06 on NYC's Armory Track in January was tied for the 19th quickest in the nation. Castro ranked first regionally in the 60m hurdles; he was sixth in the 200m and tied for seventh in the 60m. His PR time of 6.98 is tied with junior
Pat Monahan for the ESU record in the 60m.
Gaita and Castro combined for three PSAC weekly awards during the indoor season. Gaita was named Field Athlete of the Week on Jan. 16, while Castro was honored as Track Athlete of the Week on Jan. 23 and Jan. 30. Their performances helped the ESU men and women to third place team finishes at the conference championships.
Shippensburg head coach Dave Osanitsch swept the PSAC Coach of the Year honors after leading the Raiders' men's and women's programs to conference titles. Shippensburg won three of the four awards on the men's side, as Tra-C Davis (Field Athlete of the Year) and Austin Padmore (Freshman of the Year) earned the remaining two accolades.
Millersville's Sunflower Greene was named the PSAC Field Athlete of the Year for the women, while Edinboro's Stefanie Parsons received Freshman of the Year distinction.
