EAST STROUDSBURG – Former East Stroudsburg University standout pitcher
Brian Ernst has been named the No. 11 independent league prospect by Baseball America after a strong season for the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks of the American Association.
Ernst (Allentown/Salisbury) is one of four RedHawk pitchers on the list after going 7-3 with a 4.14 ERA, 82 hits allowed, 52 strikeouts and 33 walks in 84.2 innings over 14 outings – all starts.
He helped Fargo-Moorhead to the American Association North Division title, and threw his first professional complete game in game 3 of its best-of-5 semifinal series against Gary (Ind.) on Sept. 6.
In his final start of the year, Ernst retired 16 of the last 17 batters he faced, including the last 11. He yielded three runs (two earned) in the game but suffered his first loss since July 30 after winning his previous four starts.
Ernst threw 151.1 innings in 2013 between his work at ESU (66.2 IP) and Fargo-Moorhead.
He was the MVP of ESU's first PSAC baseball championship since 1971, throwing 8.0 innings without an earned run on two days rest in a 7-1 win over West Chester in the conference championship game.
Ernst was 5-2 with a 2.70 ERA, 88 strikeouts, 31 walks and 50 hits allowed as a senior – wrapping up a remarkable career in which he was the first player in PSAC history with 200 strikeouts as a pitcher and 200 hits at the plate. He finished with 201 strikeouts and 201 hits, and is in ESU's career top 10 in 16 categories – nine pitching, and seven offensive.
He was a three-time All-PSAC East and two-time All-Region selection and was a semifinalist for the Josh Willingham Award (Division II's MVP) as a senior.
Ernst is joined on the list by fellow RedHawks Nathan Kilcrease (No. 5), Joe Harris (No. 22) and Taylor Stanton (No. 23).
