EAST STROUDSBURG – East Stroudsburg University senior outfielder
Eric Boyer has been named to the Capital One Academic All-District baseball team for the third straight year, it was announced Thursday.
Boyer (Coopersburg/Southern Lehigh) is the fourth student-athlete in ESU history to earn three straight spots on an Academic All-District first team in their respective sport.
He joins Trina Carito (women's cross country/track & field – 2008, 2010-11), Matt Freed (football – 2008-10) and Katie Horst (women's at-large/field hockey – 1997-99) as three-time first team Academic All-District recipients. Senior Rose Mascoli (women's cross country/track & field) can also gain first team recognition for the third straight year later this spring.
Boyer is one of 12 players from District 2 that will advance to the national ballot for Academic All-America consideration later this month. District 2 encompasses Division II schools in the PSAC, WVIAC and CIAA.
An Earth and Space Science and Secondary Education major with a 3.67 cumulative grade-point average, Boyer is a four-year starter in the outfielder for the Warriors.
He is hitting .336 with a .433 on-base percentage, 25 RBI, 32 runs and 15 stolen bases entering the final weekend of the regular season as ESU (27-14, 11-9) plays for a spot in the PSAC Tournament with a four-game series against Millersville.
He was the PSAC East Player of the Week on April 1, going 11-for-14 against Shippensburg, part of a stretch of nine games in which he reached base in 27 of 37 plate appearances.
In ESU's career record book, he ranks second in stolen bases (56), second in stolen base percentage (86.2), third in RBI (112), tied for third in walks (85), 11th in runs (113), 14th in hits (155) and tied for 14th in total bases (220) going into this weekend.
He hit .283 with 33 RBI, 29 runs and 19 stolen bases as a junior in 2012 and was a key contributor on ESU's 2010 and 2011 PSAC Tournament teams. As a freshman, he hit .393 with 24 RBI and 28 runs, and as a sophomore, hit .331 with a .432 on-base percentage, 30 RBI and 24 runs as the Warriors finished third in the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional.
ESU has five Academic All-District selections so far this year in Rebecca Smith and Jennifer Denaro (softball), Sarah Garman (women's soccer) and Khriswayne Wallace (men's soccer). Wallace was named to the Academic All-America team in the fall. Teams for men's and women's cross country/track & field and men's and women's at-large will be announced later this spring.
Academic All-District and Academic All-America teams are nominated and voted on by members of CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America). This marks the second year that separate teams are selected in Division I, DII, DIII and NAIA/Junior College categories. Previously, teams were selected in a University Division (DI) and College Division (DII, DIII, NAIA/JC).
ESU ranks second in the PSAC with 55 Academic All-District selections in the last five years (2007-08 through 2011-12).
