Chris Knott has been named the Daktronics Atlantic Region Player of the Year, headlining three All-Region selections for the Warriors, it was announced Thursday.
Knott and redshirt senior designated hitter
Nico Delerme were both named first team All-Region on the Daktronics (sports information directors) and NCBWA (National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association) squads.
Sophomore right-hander
Brandon Holup was named to the Daktronics All-Region second team after a breakout season on the mound for the Warriors.
All-Region selections by the ABCA (American Baseball Coaches Association) will be announced later this month.
Knott (Egg Harbor Township, N.J./Egg Harbor Township) is ESU's first regional player of the year since pitcher/shortstop Joel Bennett was named the ECAC South Co-Player of the Year in 1991.
He was ESU's first-ever PSAC East Athlete of the Year and is a two-time first team All-Region selection. He was also named to the All-Regional team at the 2013 NCAA Tournament after leading the Warriors to their first PSAC championship since 1971.
Knott hit .399 with a .484 on-base percentage and .667 slugging percentage in 45 games as a senior, leading the PSAC in slugging, extra-base hits (25), total bases (102), RBI (44) and runs (46) during the regular season.
He was 61-for-153 at the plate with 15 doubles, four triples, six home runs, 21 walks and seven HBP. He was also 14-for-17 on stolen bases and had 88 putouts and four assists without an error in center field.
Knott set seven ESU career records and ranks in the top five in five other categories. He holds records for doubles (46), triples (16), home runs (19), extra-base hits (81), total bases (344), RBI (146) and games played (189) while ranking third in hits (209), runs (142) and stolen bases (57), tied for fourth with 88 walks and second with 29 HBP.
Delerme (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Red Land) currently leads Division II in on-base percentage (.557) and leads the PSAC in batting average (.437) after an outstanding senior season. He ranks second in the PSAC behind Knott in slugging percentage (.635) and is tied with Knott for the PSAC lead with 44 RBI.
A redshirt senior after his 2013 season was cut short due to injury, Delerme reached base in all 45 games this spring. He reached in 93 of 167 plate appearances with 55 hits, 37 walks and one HBP. He had 10 doubles and five home runs, collected 80 total bases and scored 36 runs. He started all 45 games - 29 as a DH, 15 at catcher and one at first base.
Holup (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Memorial) is the first ESU sophomore to earn All-Region honors since Joel Bennett in 1990.
He went 5-2 with a 2.19 ERA, sixth in the PSAC, in 49.1 innings over 11 games (seven starts) in his first season in the Warriors' weekend rotation.
In six starts against the PSAC East, Holup was 4-1 with a 2.63 ERA, three complete games and one shutout, throwing a one-hitter in a 5-0 win over Lock Haven. He beat three of the four playoff teams from the PSAC East - a complete game in a 7-2 win at Millersville, a complete game in a 3-1 win at West Chester, and 6.1 innings in a 1-0 (8 inn.) win over Bloomsburg.
He started the season in the Warriors' bullpen, allowing one earned run in 11.2 innings over five games (one start) in non-conference games before moving into the rotation for the divisional schedule.
Holup's selection gives ESU a Daktronics All-Region pitcher for the fifth time in six years, joining
Ryan Lubreski (2013, 2nd team), Jeremy Gigliotti (2009 and 2011, 1st team) and Christian Saveri (2010, 2nd team).
Knott, Delerme, Holup, senior catcher
Eric Forth and sophomore 2B
Nick Rabasco gave ESU five All-PSAC East first team selections this spring. The Warriors went 28-17, posting at least 24 victories for the sixth straight year.
Knott and Delerme were two of 13 players to earn first team All-Region status from both Daktronics and the NCBWA.
Knott, shortstop Will Kengor (Slippery Rock), pitcher Chris Murphy (Millersville) and pitcher/infielder Pat Kregeloh (Shippensburg) were all repeat selections on the Daktronics first team.
Concord first baseman Joey Miller was named Player of the Year by the NCBWA. Mercyhurst right-hander Dan Altavilla was selected as Pitcher of the Year by both organizations.
ESU has three Daktronics All-Region selections for the second straight year. Last year, Knott was on the first team and pitcher
Ryan Lubreski and pitcher/1B
Brian Ernst were on the second team.
Knott is the third ESU player to earn multiple first team All-Region awards. Jeremy Gigliotti was Daktronics first team All-Region in 2009 and 2011, when he was also named Pitcher of the Year. Joel Bennett was an NCAA North Atlantic Region first team selection in 1990 and 1991.
