Podhayny Sets ESU Record, Places 7th in 400 IM on Day 2 of PSAC Swimming Championships

YORK - Junior Ashleigh Podhayny placed seventh and broke her own school record in the 400 IM to lead East Stroudsburg University on the second day of the 2015 PSAC Swimming Championships on Friday at the York YMCA.

Podhayny swam a time of 4:35.18, breaking her mark of 4:35.64 from earlier this season. She qualified for the championship final with a time of 4:37.49 in the prelims.

Podhayny was 10th in the 200 IM on Thursday. She entered the PSAC's with top-eight times in the 200 IM, 400 IM, 100 back and 200 back.

Freshman Kate Zimmerman was 16th in the consolation final in 4:47.27 after qualifying with a prelim time of 4:45.66 (PR). She was also 16th in the 200 IM Thursday.

Senior Mara Palazzari made the consolation final in the 100 fly, placing 16th in 59.77 after swimming 59.29 in the prelims.

ESU placed seventh in the 200 free relay and eighth in the 400 medley relay.

Senior Karoline Vavra, junior Sophie Coy, freshman Annie Fagan and senior Shelby Stalnaker swam the 200 free relay in 1:39.44.

Freshman Colleen Dwyer, Zimmerman, Palazzari and Podhayny teamed for a time of 3:59.39 in the 400 medley relay.

ESU remains ninth of 13 schools through the second day of competition. The Warriors (90 points) are one point behind Edinboro for eighth.

Sophomore Kelly Buyaskas, who is impacted by cystic fibrosis, competed in the 50 free after the morning's prelim session, swimming a time of 25.93 in a time trial.

Buyaskas, a PSAC qualifier in the 50 free, 100 free and 100 breast, received a waiver to compete in the PSAC Championships. She was hospitalized for two weeks following a sudden case of the flu and suffering a collapsed lung in January, but returned to compete and swam a time that was just off her season best of 25.39.
