Luke DeLuise (184) and junior
Tyson Searer (285) lead East Stroudsburg University's national qualifier hopefuls as the NCAA Division II Super Region 1 Tournament is contested on Friday and Saturday at West Liberty.
Richardson has been ranked No. 1 in the region in the last three sets of rankings (Jan. 26, Feb. 9, Feb. 23), with Searer listed No. 3 and DeLuise at No. 4 in the most recent rankings.
The top four finishers at each weight class will advance to the NCAA DII Championships on March 13-14 in St. Louis.
Searer is ESU's only returning national qualifier, earning a spot at 197 pounds as a freshman in 2013.
ESU has had nine wrestlers combine for 12 NCAA qualifying spots in the last five years since reclassifying to DII prior to the 2009-10 season. ESU has had at least one national qualifier each season under head coach
Joey Rivera, and four Warriors have gone on to earn All-America honors.
Richardson, in his first season at 197 pounds after competing at 285 as a freshman, has posted a 15-7 overall record and 8-1 mark against in-region competition, earning the region's top ranking.
He is 2-0 against wrestlers currently ranked in the top six. He posted an 8-6 decision over Shippensburg's Jalal Paige on January 13, when Paige was ranked No. 1 in the region, and followed with a second-period pin of Ohio Valley's Chase Long, who was ranked No. 2, on January 17.
Long is currently ranked No. 2 and Paige is No. 6 in the weight class.
DeLuise, entering his third regional at 184 pounds, placed sixth as a redshirt sophomore in 2013 and reached the consolation quarterfinals last year.
He enters with a 13-7 record (11-4 in-region) and a solid 3-3 mark against regionally-ranked competition. He split two meetings with No. 2-ranked Dakota DesLauriers (Mercyhurst) and No. 3 Andre Petroski (Kutztown), and is coming off a second-period pin of Petroski on February 17. He also pinned No. 5 Jabari Irons (Ohio Valley) in January and lost an 8-4 decision to No. 6 Adam Nickleson (UPJ) on November 25.
Searer is 21-7 overall (11-4 in-region) and coming off a stellar 13-1 dual season. He has won 11 straight matches (nine on the mat) since his last defeat, an injury default against Peter Anguiano (Western State) at the Midwest Classic on December 13.
Searer hasn't faced any of the top three entries at 285, split two matches with No. 5 Andrew Welton (Mercyhurst) and went 1-2 against No. 4 Nick Budd (Gannon). He won his most recent match-ups with both wrestlers.
ESU returns one other former regional placewinner in junior
Anthony Marino (125), who was fourth last season but missed an NCAA trip with only the top three finishers advancing at each weight class. He was fifth in 2013.
Marino is 3-7 (1-4 in-region) in an injury-shortened season and hasn't competed since January 29. He was 3-2 at the regional last year after entering as the No. 6 seed.
ESU will also send out redshirt sophomore
Marius Kola (133), freshman
Christian Silva (141), redshirt freshman
Eric Januszkiewicz (149), redshirt junior
Eric Howey (157), redshirt sophomore
Matt Wax (165) and redshirt junior
Dan Ingulli (174).
Last year,
Brendan McKeown (174) became ESU's first three-time DII national qualifier with a second-place finish. He was the regional champion and Outstanding Wrestler the previous year.
ESU has three regional champions in five years in DII in McKeown (174 - 2013), Ed Ebewo (197 - 2012) and Jeff Jacobs (174 - 2011).
