EAST STROUDSBURG - East Stroudsburg University redshirt sophomore third baseman Jay Young has been named to the Capital One Academic All-America second team for the 2015 season, it was announced Wednesday.

Young (Pen Argyl, Pa./Pen Argyl), a Physics and Computer Science double major, has a 3.82 grade-point average through five semesters at ESU.

Young is the fourth Academic All-America selection in ESU baseball history, joining outfielder Eric Boyer (2013, 3rd team), pitcher Mike Balent (1985, 2nd team) and infielder Mike Petruny (1979, 1st team).

Young hit .396 with a .453 on-base percentage and .491 slugging percentage while playing in 45 games (43 starts) between the infield and outfield, helping the Warriors (31-19) reach the championship game of the PSAC Tournament.

He had 67 hits, 11 doubles, one triple, one home run, 40 RBI, 39 runs and 11 stolen bases while hitting in the leadoff spot in 39 of his 43 starts. He made 27 starts at third base, nine at second base, five in left field and two as designated hitter.

Young maintained a batting average over .400 from March 8 until the final day of the season. He had a team-best 13-game hitting streak from February 14 through March 22 and hit safely in 37 of 43 starts overall. He compiled 22 multi-hit games.

Young is one of three sophomores among the 34 selections across DII.

He is one of five student-athletes from the PSAC, along with Mercyhurst pitcher Jon Klein (1st team), California infielder Matt Peters (1st team), Kutztown outfielder Brandon Martinez (2nd team) and Mercyhurst pitcher Ben Nolan (3rd team).

Young is the third ESU student-athlete named Academic All-America this year, joining defensive lineman Bryan Thomson (1st team) and wide receiver Jon Schnaars (2nd team) last fall.

Five ESU student-athletes are still eligible for Academic All-America teams later this spring for women's at-large (Jamie Kane, swimming) and track and field/cross country (Christina O'Connor, William Berry, Damien Boham, Alex Zubko).

About the Academic All-District and All-America program

The Academic All-District and Academic All-America teams recognize student-athletes for athletic and academic achievement and are nominated and voted on by members of CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America).

ESU is third in the PSAC with 83 Academic All-District selections in the last eight years (since 2007-08).

ESU had nine Academic All-District selections in 2014-15 - Bryan Thomson and Jon Schnaars (football), Shea Neal (women's soccer), Young (baseball), Jamie Kane (women's at-large - swimming), Christina O'Connor (women's track & field/cross country) and William Berry, Damien Boham and Alex Zubko (men's track & field/cross country).

The Warriors have three Academic All-America selections so far in 2014-15 - Thomson, Schnaars and Young.

This marks the fourth year that separate teams have been selected for Division II, Division III and College Division (NAIA/Canadian schools/two-year schools) institutions. The previous "College Division" included all DII, DIII, Canadian and junior college programs.

District 2 of Division II follows the NCAA's regional model and includes all schools from the PSAC (Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference), Mountain East Conference and CIAA (Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association). The Northeast-10 Conference is also included in the region for football.

ESU has had 37 student-athletes combine for 51 Academic All-America awards in school history. Twenty student-athletes have combined for 28 awards in the last seven years.
