EAST STROUDSBURG - Redshirt sophomore Shane Mallory won five matches to finish second at 174, and sophomore Chris Birchler placed third at 285 at the 41st annual ESU Open, held Saturday at Koehler Fieldhouse.

More than 500 wrestlers competed in one of the oldest Division I wrestling tournaments in the country. Virginia Tech had three individual winners, followed by two from Columbia.

The top four place-winners were determined at each weight class, while the rest of the consolations were cut off due to the number of wrestlers in the field. No team scores were recorded.

Mallory's day included a pin of John Barrett (Delaware Valley) in 2:30 in the third round. Mallory went on to defeat Fred Rowsey (Harvard) in a 9-5 decision and Edward Ruth (Iron Eagle) by a 5-3 decision in the semifinals before falling 13-0 to Chris Barrick of Shippensburg, who surrendered just three points in taking the championship at 174 pounds.

Birchler opened by pinning Martin Kuhn (Gloucester County) in 32 seconds, and posted three more victories until he was defeated by the eventual champion, Cody Gardner of Virginia Tech. Birchler posted a 7-1 decision over Scott Clark (Army) for third place.

Redshirt junior Matt Swallow (133), senior Sean Carr (141), and redshirt senior Scott Heckman (157) each won their first three matches for the Warriors. Swallow was forced out of the tournament due to an injury, while Heckman went out in the fourth round to Derek Sickles (Columbia), the eventual champion.

At 184, senior Dave Williams won a 7-0 decision over Eddie Broderick (Wagner) before dropping a 5-4 decision to Matt Ryan (Virginia Tech), who placed third in the weight class.

ESU will open its dual season on Saturday, Dec. 1 against Drexel at 1 p.m. at Northampton High School. The home opener is on Wednesday, Dec. 5 at 7 p.m. against Army.
