ESU Wrestling Drops 30-9 Decision to Drexel

NORTHAMPTON - Drexel won five of the eight bouts contested to defeat East Stroudsburg University 30-9 in the Warriors' first dual match of the 2007-08 season on Saturday afternoon at Northampton High School.

Three of Drexel's wins came from former Northampton wrestlers back in their home gym. Steve Mytych began the afternoon with a pin of ESU's Matthew Benedetti at 125, Billy Haydt won a 3-1 decision over Joe Schick at 157, and Justin Wieller downed Dave Williams 9-4 at 184.

ESU won the next three bouts after Mytych gave the Dragons a 6-0 lead at 125.

Junior Matt Swallow (133) used a one-minute advantage in riding time to earn a 5-4 decision over William Martin. Senior Sean Carr (141) followed with a 9-3 decision against Morgan Remillard, and junior Alex Bimes (149) took a 5-2 decision from Kyle Bub.

All-American Ryan Hluschak, ranked No. 7 in the nation at 157 pounds, decisioned Kyle Heselpoth 11-4 to break the ESU run. Haydt, Scott Hunter (174) and Wieller each won decisions for Drexel, and the Dragons took the final two bouts by forfeit.

Hluschak is the older brother of ESU freshman Adam Hluschak, a four-time state placewinner at Northern Lehigh who will wrestler at 133 pounds for the Warriors.

Drexel head coach Jack Childs, a 1967 ESU graduate and 1995 inductee into the Athletic Hall of Fame, earned the 475th dual victory of his career. The Warriors were wrestling their first dual under first-year interim head coach Joey Rivera.

ESU will host Army in its home opener on Wednesday, Dec. 5 at 7 p.m. at Koehler Fieldhouse. The match will be broadcast on tape-delay that evening at 10:30 p.m. on Blue Ridge TV-13.
