EAST STROUDSBURG - Juniors Lynda Hicks and Ashley Becker came off the bench to score goals late in the first half as East Stroudsburg University won its PSAC women's soccer opener 2-1 over Bloomsburg in the first game of a historic doubleheader on Wednesday night at Eiler-Martin Stadium.
The victory was the first career win for ESU head coach Rob Berkowitz, who was an assistant coach at Gardner-Webb for seven years before accepting the head coaching position for the Warriors.
ESU drew a total of 1,341 fans to the stadium to watch the first night soccer games in school history. ESU President Robert J. Dillman, Director of Athletics Dr. Tom Gioglio and Student Activities Association President Robb Ruiz participated in a ceremony to dedicate the lights following the women's game.
Hicks scored with 4:12 left in the first half, and Becker added a goal with 34 seconds remaining off an assist from sophomore Samantha New. ESU held a 15-8 advantage in shots in the first half.
Lauren Hess scored for Bloomsburg 15 minutes into the second half to make the score 2-1, but the Warriors locked down defensively to seal the victory.
Junior goalkeeper Janine Turcio made 10 saves in her first start for ESU. Brittany Moses had 11 saves for the Huskies.
ESU will host IUP in a non-conference game on Saturday at 2 p.m. at Eiler-Martin Stadium.
