CHARLESTON, W.V. - The East Stroudsburg University women's volleyball team went 1-3 as it was on the road for its final away tournament of the season last weekend.
The Warriors fell to the host University of Charleston and Glenville State on Friday night in four and five games respectively. They picked up their lone victory on Saturday sweeping Concord in three games before wrapping up the weekend with a loss to Alderson Broaddus.
A trio of freshman highlighted the first nights action as outside hitters Kayla Mahaffay and Alyson Stark both tallied double digit kills in each match and totaled 24 kills in all. Glenville had no answer for Mahaffay as she recorded 14 kills on 29 total attacks for a hitting percentage of .483. The other freshman standout was Amy Casteel, as she had 38 assists in both matches.
On Saturday, ESU had a great team effort against Concord as five different players had at least four kills, led by junior Lindsay Sewalk who registered 8 kills and a hitting percentage of .333. Freshman setter Tatiana Lattimore had 24 assists in the match.
With the upgraded out of conference schedule, the Warriors will be battle tested and open up conference play on the road against West Chester tomorrow night. The match-up pits the two favorites to contend for the PSAC East division title as ESU was selected as the pre-season favorite and WCU as the second place team. ESU stands at 3-7 overall while WCU holds a perfect 13-0 mark.
