EAST STROUDSBURG - Jhazmin Brown scored 16 points to lead a balanced scoring effort and East Stroudsburg University forced 27 turnovers in a 70-58 win over the University of the Sciences in non-conference women's basketball on Saturday.
Jackie Yandrisevits had 15 points and Keri Cahill scored a career-high 14 points off the bench for the Warriors. Cahill was 8-of-8 at the foul line to help ESU to an 18-of-20 performance at the charity stripe.
ESU (7-8) led throughout the game with the exception of 2-0 and 10-8 deficits early in the game. The Warriors used a 9-1 run, fueled by a three-pointer by Cahill, to take a 17-11 lead eight minutes into the half, and held a 31-30 advantage at halftime.
ESU put together an 11-1 stretch midway through the second half and opened its first double-digit lead of the game on a layup by sophomore guard Mel Villano off a pass from Cahill with just over nine minutes left.
The Warriors held USP (8-7) to eight points over the final seven minutes to protect the lead. USP cut the deficit to eight with 1:38 left, but Brown made two free throws and went coast-to-coast for a layup, and DeAnna Rayam had a steal and two foul shots to close the game on a 6-2 run.
Allison Weiss (12 points, 13 rebounds) and Erin Chesnavich (14 boards) helped USP to a 50-32 advantage on the glass but shot just 34 percent for the game. Alyssa Ham led the Devils with 15 points and Caitlin Shaw added 13 points.
The Warriors will take a 1-0 PSAC East record into their next action on Wednesday with a 6 p.m. tip against Bloomsburg.
