EAST STROUDSBURG - Sophomore Joanna Reckley scored the first goal of the game for the Warriors and assisted on another as East Stroudsburg University defeated Mansfield 4-2 in a PSAC crossover field hockey match-up on Saturday afternoon.
Reckley scored unassisted following a penalty corner 6:34 into the first period to give the Warriors an early 1-0 advantage. The Mounties responded quickly to tie the game when senior Rebekah Brown found the back of the cage less than two minutes later at the 8:26 mark.
The score remained tied at 1-1 until late in the first period when senior Shana Markwis scored off a deflection with 15 seconds left in the period to give Mansfield a 2-1 lead at the break.
The Warriors applied the pressure in the second half and were able to knot the score at 2-2 when sophomore Monica Gombita beat Mansfield goalkeeper Brianna DeLuca on a penalty stroke 9:43 into the period. Sophomore Brittany Kocis gave ESU the lead with the eventual game-winner when she scored with 19:05 remaining.
ESU added another score five minutes later when freshman Devin Whalen scored her first career goal of an assist by Reckley.
Senior Carolyn Kisling played the first 67:15 in the cage for ESU, allowing two goals and making two saves. Junior Megan Cappuccino came on to finish the final 2:45 for the Warriors.
ESU next faces Catawba at Whitenight Field on Tuesday at 3 p.m.
