STROUDSBURG - East Stroudsburg University alumni Drew Nesbitt broke his own course record by one second and Lindsay Ray of Kutztown won the women's race to highlight the fifth annual Nevins Invitational on Saturday.
Nesbitt held a 22-second advantage over 2008 ESU graduate Iuri Pinto, an All-American in the 1500m last season. Freshman Sean Norberg and sophomore Chris Zadroga were third and fourth as the Warriors' top two finishers, and freshman Sam Janssen was sixth.
ESU's men's cross country team edged the alumni by four points (36-40), with ESU track finishing third and Moravian coming in fourth.
Junior Rachel Ostroski was second in the women's race, 11 seconds behind Ray. Freshman Jonna Trexler, sophomore Amy Moratz and senior Amanda Bradbury were all in the top 10 to help the Warriors hold off Kutztown for their fourth team title in five years.
The Nevins Invitational was first run in 2004 to honor former ESU sports information director Pete Nevins, a vocal and diehard supporter of the Warriors' track and field and cross country programs. Nevins passed away in January 2006 and has been honored by several organizations, including the PSAC sports information directors, who named the conference's Scholar-Athlete of the Year award in his memory.
ESU competes at the PSAC Championships next Saturday at Lock Haven and will travel to Slippery Rock for the NCAA Regionals the following weekend.
