EAST STROUDSBURG - East Stroudsburg University's men's and women's soccer teams were both selected to the NCAA Division II tournament field on Monday. The men will be making their 16th postseason appearance under head coach Jerry Sheska, while the women are in the NCAA playoffs for the second time in school history.
Both teams will be in action on Friday. The women play West Virginia Wesleyan in a first round game at noon at West Chester, and the men face Slippery Rock in the semifinals at 4 p.m. at Millersville.
The women's second round game will be played on Sunday at noon with the winner of the ESU/WV Wesleyan game taking on West Chester. If the Warriors advance out of this weekend's action, they will move into the third-round and quarterfinal games the following week.
The men's Atlantic Regional final on Sunday at 2 p.m. will match ESU or Slippery Rock against the winner of the other semifinal between Millersville and California. The Atlantic Region champion will play the team that comes out of the Midwest Region next week.
The ESU men (15-6) will be making their 19th trip to the Division II playoffs and the 31st postseason appearance in school history. They will be playing in the NCAA tournament for the 12th time in 15 years under Sheska, who became the fifth head coach in Division II history to reach 400 career wins this season.
Senior forward Roshane Ellison is the team's leading scorer with 17 goals and five assists and is accompanied by senior forward Kevin Holmes (9 g, 4 a), senior midfielder Jason Shegda (7 g, 7 a) and junior midfielder Toric Robinson (3 g, 8 a). Junior back Danny Drago is a returning All-American, sophomore Michael Kane is in his first year as the sweeper and junior goalkeeper Larry Pokrywa is among the best in the conference in goals against average.
The women (11-5-4) are making the second NCAA appearance in program history and the first since 1997. Head coach Rob Berkowitz has led the Warriors to the PSAC semifinals in each of his first two years at ESU.
The Warriors are led offensively by two Pleasant Valley graduates, senior forward Lynda Hicks and sophomore midfielder Lindsay Foder. Hicks has 17 goals this year, including both goals in ESU's 2-1 win at Bloomsburg in the PSAC quarterfinals last week, and Foder has eight goals and five assists. Senior Janel Cleffi is a standout in the center midfield and senior sweeper Tara Takac and senior goalkeeper Janine Turcio lead one of the PSAC's best defenses.
The Daktronics Division II Soccer Atlantic Region teams will be announced Tuesday, with the All-PSAC East teams slated for release over the next two days.
