DeAnna Rayam scored a career-high 20 points and sophomore guard
Kristen Murray added 16 as East Stroudsburg University won 76-68 at the University of the Sciences for its first victory of the 2008-09 season on Thursday night.
Rayam hit four three-pointers, Murray was 6-of-9 from the field and junior guard Mel Villano (12 points) and senior forward Jackie Yandrisevits (10) gave ESU four players in double figures.
Yandrisevits had six rebounds and five assists and Rayam also grabbed six rebounds. Senior guard Keri Cahill handed out seven assists and is averaging 6.0 through the first three games, and junior center Alexa Detzi had four points and eight boards as the Warriors received key contributions from nearly every player on the floor.
Erin Chesnavich had 25 points and seven rebounds and Caitlin Shaw scored 17 points for USP, which went on a 17-4 run in the first five minutes of the second half to take a 46-37 lead. The Warriors responded by scoring 11 of the next 13 points, six from Murray and five from Rayam on a triple and two free throws, to knot the score at 48-all with 12:35 left.
Another 7-0 run after a USP bucket gave the Warriors a five-point lead. While ESU never trailed from that point, the Devils managed to tie the score at 59-all before another 8-1 spurt, which included a jumper and a three-pointer by Murray, put the game away.
ESU forced 30 turnovers, including 20 in the first half while building a 33-29 lead at the break. The Warriors opened the game with a 10-2 lead with all five starters getting in the scorebook, and sophomore forward Rachel Grimes scored nine first-half points.
ESU plays twice in the next four days, with a trip to Concordia on Saturday leading up to the home opener on Monday at 7 p.m. vs. Felician.
