BETHLEHEM - Moravian overcame a four-point deficit in the final minute of regulation and went on to a 73-68 overtime win against visiting East Stroudsburg University in non-conference women's basketball on Friday night at Johnston Hall.
Senior forward Jackie Yandrisevits and junior forward DeAnna Rayam both scored 21 points for the Warriors (5-3), who lost for the first time since the opening weekend of the season. Yandrisevits had 10 rebounds to move into 10th in school history with 560 career boards. She passes former teammate Monika Fogelsanger, who had 559 career rebounds from 2004-05 to 2007-08.
Yandrisevits is one of five ESU players to rank in the top 10 in career points and rebounds, and is currently sixth with 1,393 career points. She surpassed 20 points and 10 rebounds for the third time this season and has eight career double-doubles.
Rayam's 21 points were a career-high and included three three-pointers and a 6-for-7 effort at the foul line. She played 44 minutes and was one of four Warriors to log more than 40 minutes, along with Yandrisevits (43) and junior guard Mel Villano (42).
ESU overcame a 19-point second-half deficit in a 96-89 OT win over the Greyhounds last season. The victory on Jan. 9, 2008 and Friday night's game are the only two overtime games the Warriors have played since the 1997-98 season, and have come in the only two meetings between the schools.
Kirsty Stearns had 18 points and 11 boards for Moravian (6-1) and Jessica Foran scored 17 and was 10-of-10 from the foul line in the second half and overtime.
ESU led most of the second half in a game which featured 12 ties and 12 lead changes. The Warriors held a 64-60 lead after Yandrisevits made the front end of a one-and-one with 1:00 left, but sophomore guard Kristen Murray was called for "faking going into the lane" as Yandrisevits made the second free throw to turn the ball over to the Greyhounds.
Foran made two free throws with 43 seconds left, and Alyssa Bisci tied the game at 64-all with a pair of foul shots with 23 seconds remaining following an ESU turnover. Yandrisevits was whistled for an offensive foul while driving to the basket with five seconds to go and Foran missed a three-pointer at the buzzer to force overtime.
Moravian's Jessica Brown hit a triple to open the extra session before Yandrisevits and sophomore forward Rachel Grimes (10 points, eight rebounds) made back-to-back jump shots to give the Warriors their final lead of the game, 68-67, with 3:11 left. Foran came back with a jumper to put Moravian in front.
ESU was unable to find the go-ahead basket on its next three possessions and Foran gave Moravian a 71-68 edge with two free throws with 15 seconds left. Rayam missed a game-tying three-pointer and Stearns hit a pair from the line to seal the victory.
The Warriors travel to Seton Hill next Wednesday for their final game before Christmas break.
