EASTON - Junior Paul Wagner broke his own school record in the weight throw and was one of seven athletes from East Stroudsburg University to win their events at the season-opening Lafayette Invitational on Saturday at Kirby Sports Center.
Wagner threw 58-8 1/2 to set the school record and win the PSAC championship last winter and bettered the throw by one quarter of an inch in the first meet of the 2008-09 indoor season. He was also second in the shot put with a mark of 46-3 1/2.
Sophomore Jasmine Johnson (220yd dash), sophomore Lynn Mayer (high jump), junior Trina Carito (triple jump), junior Rusty Smith (60yd hurdles), freshman Daniel Johnson (high jump) and junior Drew Miller (triple jump) also won their events for the Warriors.
Mayer, a returning indoor and outdoor All-American in the high jump, won with a height of 5-4 1/2. On the men's side, Johnson was victorious in his first collegiate meet after clearing 6-4 3/4.
Smith was an indoor All-American in the 60m hurdles last March and covered 60 yards in 7.66 seconds.
Carito was the PSAC indoor triple jump champion a year ago and nearly matched her winning mark with a jump of 37-4 1/2, and Mayer was third. Drew Miller won the men's PSAC triple jump championship and opened his season with a distance of 45-3 3/4.
Johnson's time of 26.71 seconds won the 220 yard dash. Senior Katherine Doyle was second in the 60 yard dash and third in the 220, and sophomore Brittiny Mackey finished third in the 60 yard hurdles.
In the women's throwing events, junior Emily Carothers was second in the weight and third in the shot put, while sophomore Jessica Sekely was third in the weight.
Other top finishers on the men's side included junior Andrew McCloskey, who was second in the 60 yard dash, and junior Chris Reddick, who was second in the 440 yard dash. Junior Matthew Gallup, an NCAA automatic qualifier in the pole vault during the outdoor season, was second in the event on Saturday.
The Warriors do not compete again until Friday, Jan. 9 at the PSAC East Championship at Kutztown.
