ERIE - Junior Chris Birchler was the runner-up at heavyweight and redshirt junior Shane Mallory, the sixth seed at 197 pounds entering the tournament, finished third for East Stroudsburg University at the 2008 PSAC Wrestling Championships on Saturday at Mercyhurst College.

Birchler, the No. 2 seed, pinned Kutztown's Cory Rutt with 18 seconds left in the first period and won a 9-4 decision over No. 3 seed Frank McGrath of Gannon before he was pinned with nine seconds left in the second period of his championship bout with Joe Fendone of Edinboro, the top seed.

Mallory won two sudden victory decisions over Clarion's Jamie Luckett, the No. 3 seed, during his run to finish third. He started the day with a 7-5 overtime win against Luckett before falling 5-2 to No. 2 Ben Hepburn of Lock Haven. In the wrestlebacks, Mallory decisioned No. 5 Trevor Gallo (Mercyhurst) 8-3 and then topped Luckett again, this time 3-2, for third.

ESU finished seventh of the 10 PSAC schools, besting Kutztown, Shippensburg and Millersville. The Warriors were seventh of eight schools last year, with Mercyhurst and Gannon joining the conference this year and finishing just ahead of ESU in fifth and sixth, respectively.

Redshirt senior Scott Heckman also made the semifinals at 149 before suffering setbacks to Edinboro's Torsten Gillespie and top-seeded Matt Fittery of Lock Haven in the third-place match.

Redshirt sophomore Jeff Jacobs placed fifth at 165 pounds for a successful PSAC championship debut for the Warriors. Jacobs entered unseeded but had two wins in the consolations, including a 6-2 decision over Aaron Ernst of Lock Haven to finish fifth.

Redshirt senior Matt Swallow also finished fifth, where he was seeded prior to the championship. He decisioned Shippensburg's Andrew Jones 5-4 and fell 6-4 to Mercyhurst's Michael Baxter, the No. 4 seed, in the quarterfinals. He came back with a 6-4 decision over Gannon's Ethan Swope, dropped a 14-8 decision to No. 3 Jason Guffey of Bloomsburg and then edged Baxter 10-6 in the rematch of their quarterfinal bout.

ESU returns to dual action with a number of matches next weekend at the Bloomsburg Duals (Saturday) and Lock Haven Duals (Sunday).
