CLARION - Sophomore Chris Birchler placed second at 285 pounds and Matt Swallow (133), Sean Carr (141) and Shane Mallory (174) all finished third for East Stroudsburg University at the 2007 PSAC Wrestling Championships, held Saturday at Clarion.

Birchler entered as the No. 3 seed and knocked off No. 2 seed Joe Fendone (Edinboro) 7-1 to reach the final, where he fell 9-2 to top-seeded Michael Spaid of Bloomsburg.

Carr, the No. 5 seed, beat a pair of wrestlers seeded ahead of him to place third at 141. He opened with a 4-3 decision over No. 4 George Hickman of Bloomsburg before dropping a 7-4 decision to No. 1 Steve Fittery of Edinboro.

Carr responded with a 3-2 decision over Mike Greck (Millersville) and earned a hard-fought 6-4 decision against No. 2 Torsten Gillespie of Edinboro to win the consolation bracket.

Swallow also dropped his only match against the top seed in the 133-pound bracket. He fell 12-6 to No. 1 Rick Deubel of Edinboro after decisioning Mark Stockdill (Millersville) 10-5 in the first round.

Swallow also beat Stockdill in the consolation final, this time by a 6-4 score, following a 3-2 decision over Rob LaBrake of Clarion in the wrestlebacks.

Mallory was the No. 4 seed and fell 6-4 in overtime to No. 5 Nathan Graham (Bloomsburg) in the first round. He came back with a 14-4 major decision over Curtis Beardsell of Kutztown and advanced to the third-place match due to a medical forfeit.

Mallory redeemed his earlier loss to Graham with a 3-2 decision to finish third in the bracket.

ESU had 46 points to finish seven of the eight PSAC schools. The Warriors did not enter a wrestler at 184 or 197. Edinboro tied a PSAC record with seven individual champions to run away with the team title.
