NEW YORK, N.Y. - Senior Iuri Pinto qualified for the NCAA Division II Championships and was less than two seconds off the school record in the mile to lead East Stroudsburg University's top performances at the Lafayette-Rider Winter Games on Friday at The Armory in New York City.
Pinto's time of 4:10.83 is one of the 10 fastest in Division II this season and will send him to Mankato State for the NCAA Championships in mid-March.
Pinto was one of several Warriors to come within reach of a school record, while Rusty Smith and Matt Gallup equaled marks they set earlier this year.
Smith set the school record in the 60m hurdles in 8.25 last week at the New Balance Collegiate Invitational at The Armory and ran the same time on the same track on Friday.
Gallup cleared 15-9 in the pole vault at Lehigh's John Covert Classic three weeks ago and matched that height at The Armory.
Chris Reddick ran the second-fastest time in the 400m in school history, clocking in at 49.86 seconds, less than three-tenths shy of the school record. Jeff McClenton, who set the 60m dash record earlier this season, ran the 200m in 22.62. Andrew McCloskey established the record of 22.39 last month at the Bucknell Heptagonal.
The women's 4x400m relay team finished second to Penn with a time of 3:56.42. The squad of Jasmine Johnson, Leslie Martin, Trina Carito and Katherine Doyle is closing in on the school record of 3:55.38.
In the women's track events, Niki Pasquarella was sixth in the 3000 and Amy Moratz was seventh in the 5000. Brittiny Mackey (8th, 500), Sam LaPergola (14th, 800), Johnson (16th, 400) and Doyle (22nd, 200) also had strong showings against competitive fields.
In the field events, Lynn Mayer continued her impressive freshman indoor season in the high jump, where she finished third at 5-5. Carito and Martin both cleared 5-3 in the event. Steph Weber had a top-10 effort in the pole vault with a height of 10-4.
Ryan Kramer was fifth in the men's high jump (6-3 1/2), Paul Wagner was sixth in the weight throw (52-3 1/2), and Drew Miller was in the top 15 in both the triple jump and the long jump.
