CATAWBA, N.C. - Senior Kristen Halvorsen threw a complete game and junior catcher Amanda Feist hit the game-winning home run in the fifth inning to lead East Stroudsburg University to a 4-3 win over Indianapolis in the softball season opener on Friday in North Carolina.

Lenoir-Rhyne (N.C.) scored five runs in the fifth inning to take an 11-3 win over the Warriors in the second game of the day. ESU will face Fairmont State and Limestone on Saturday, and finish the trip against Lincoln Memorial on Sunday.

Indianapolis scored twice in the first before ESU tied the score in the bottom of the inning on RBI singles by seniors Candice Pastor and Ali Hale. The Greyhounds added another run in the top of the second and held a 3-2 lead until the bottom of the fourth.

Sophomore Brianna Malachowski led off with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Kara Darcey and scored on a base hit by freshman Jamie Mingis to tie the game at 3-3.

Feist came through with the go-ahead home run in the fifth, and Halvorsen settled down after giving up the three early runs to blank the Greyhounds for the final five innings.

In the second game, Lenoir-Rhyne led 6-0 through the first three innings before ESU plated three runs in the fourth, all on home runs. Freshman Brittany Racek led off the inning with her first career homer, and Hale went deep after senior Eliza Morosco was hit by a pitch to pull the Warriors within 6-3.

Lenoir-Rhyne ended the game with its five-run fifth to make the score 11-3 and invoke the eight-run rule.

Junior Jen Bensinger started and pitched the first three innings, and freshman Sam Bastian was in the circle for the final two innings.
