ESU Wrestling Falls to Binghamton, 26-15

EAST STROUDSBURG - East Stroudsburg University got first period pins from Dave Williams and Chris Birchler in the final two bouts of the night but fell 26-15 to Binghamton University in non-conference wrestling on Friday night at Koehler Fieldhouse.

Williams won for the fourth straight time at 197 pounds, with three of the victories coming by a first period fall after pinning Corey Waite in 2:40. Williams won for the fifth straight time in dual competition.

Birchler pinned Dan Bittner in 44 seconds to improve to 20-7 on the season. He has a team-best five falls and is 8-4 in duals in his first year as a Warrior.

Binghamton won seven of the first eight bouts, with the Warriors' only victory coming from Matthew Benedetti with a 10-3 decision over Mike Kleeman at 133 pounds.

ESU's starters wrestled up a weight class from 133 through 157 as Kyle Heselpoth was out due to illness. Redshirt freshman David Luthy got his first career start and earned a second-period takedown and three near fall points but lost 9-6 to Tyler Malmberg.

After a major decision by Binghamton at 141 pounds, ESU senior Sean Carr went for the upset of Kyle Fried, ranked No. 19 in the nation at 149. Carr tied the bout at 1-1 with an escape with 20 seconds left, but Fried held the riding time advantage and had a takedown in the final 10 seconds as Carr took a shot to go for the win.

Nate Patterson continued the Bearcats' run with a pin at 157 pounds. Joe Schick dropped a close 4-3 decision to Brett Nelson at 165, and Josh Patterson sealed the win for Binghamton at 174 with an 11-3 major decision over Shane Mallory.

Anthony Esposito picked up Binghamton's final points of the night with a 10-5 decision against Tom Pagano.

ESU (3-10) will travel to Bucknell for a 7 p.m. match next Friday. The Warriors host Boston University, the alma mater of head coach Joey Rivera, in the home finale on Sunday, Feb. 17 at 1 p.m.
