Smith Moves into 60m Hurdles Finals at NCAA Championships

MANKATO, Minn. - Sophomore Rusty Smith advanced to Saturday's final in the 60m hurdles and broke the school record with a time of 8.04 seconds on Friday at the NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field Championships at Mankato State University.

Smith will be the 13th All-American in indoor track & field in school history if he completes the race on Saturday, as the top eight finishers earn All-America honors. He was third in his heat and fifth overall behind the top two runners entering the finals, Jeremy Jackson of Pittsburg State and Terry Liggins of South Dakota.

Senior Iuri Pinto placed 10th in the mile, one spot out of a trip to the finals, with a time of 4:19.05. Julius Nyango of Abilene Christian finished in 4:18.79 to edge Pinto in his heat. Pinto entered the race as the 13th seed.

Triple jumper Drew Miller and high jumpers Lynn Mayer and Janelle Smith will compete in the finals of their events on Saturday.

Miller will be the second of seven competitors in the second flight of the triple jump, which begins at 2 p.m. Smith will jump fifth and Mayer will be 13th of the 15 women's athletes competing in the high jump.
