OSCEOLA, Fla. - East Stroudsburg University closed its appearance at the Rebel Spring Games with a pair of losses on Friday, 1-0 vs. Ashland (Ohio) and 6-2 to Caldwell College (N.J.).
Senior pitcher Kristen Halvorsen allowed only an unearned run in the fifth inning and struck out five, but Ashland held the Warriors scoreless for their third one-run loss of the week.
Against Caldwell, the Cougars scored three runs in the second before ESU scratched out a run in both the third and fourth innings. In the third, sophomore Brianna Malachowski and senior Missy McAloon both singled and moved up on a sacrifice bunt by freshman Jamie Mingis. Freshman Brittany Racek followed with a walk to load the bases, and Malachowski came home on a sacrifice fly by junior Eliza Morosco.
Malachowski also figured into the scoring in the fourth, as sophomore Kara Darcey singled, moved up on a fielders choice by sophomore Jackie Battaglino, and scored on a base hit by Malachowski to pull ESU within 3-2.
Caldwell recovered with two runs in the bottom of the fourth, and plated another run in the fifth to close the scoring.
Junior Jen Bensinger got the start for ESU and went the first three innings, and Battaglino threw the final three frames.
ESU will return to action on Tuesday with a 3 p.m. doubleheader at Columbia Union.
