TAKOMA PARK, Md. - East Stroudsburg University hit three home runs in a 16-0 win in the first game and won game two 9-3 to sweep a non-conference softball doubleheader at Columbia Union on Tuesday.
Freshman Jamie Mingis and sophomore Kara Darcey both went deep in an eight-run third inning after ESU (6-11) took a 1-0 lead in the second, and sophomore Brianna Malachowski homered as the Warriors scored seven runs in the fourth inning.
Malachowski was 3-for-3 and added a double, an RBI single and scored two runs in the opener. Darcey's home run came with two runners on base and was her second of the season.
Senior Kristen Halvorsen and junior Jen Bensinger combined on a three-hit shutout, with Halvorsen pitching the first three innings and Bensinger coming in for the final two frames in an abbreviated five-inning game.
In the second game, the Warriors went ahead 2-0 with a pair of unearned runs in the third inning before exploding for six runs in the fifth, all coming with two outs. Senior Candice Pastor started the scoring with an RBI single, freshman pitcher Becky Benner singled home another run and senior Laura Snyder broke the inning open with a two-run double.
Benner threw the first four innings for her first career win, and sophomore Jackie Battaglino tossed three innings for the first save of her career.
ESU will host Holy Family in its first home action of the season next Monday at 2:30 p.m.
