EAST STROUDSBURG - Junior Katie Cook and freshman Molly O'Hara both had two goals and an assist to lead the East Stroudsburg University women's lacrosse team to its fifth straight win to open the season with an 8-5 victory over Bloomsburg on Wednesday at Eiler-Martin Stadium.
The Warriors improve to 3-0 in the PSAC with the win over the Huskies, who were picked third in the PSAC preseason poll. ESU was 3-12 overall and 2-12 in the PSAC a year ago.
ESU held a 2-0 lead at halftime with freshman Michelle Mangiaruga having a hand in both goals. Mangiaruga scored the game's first goal on a free position shot with 18:28 left in the half, and assisted on a goal by senior Eileen Sanderson four minutes later.
Cook scored on an assist from O'Hara four minutes into the second half before Bloomsburg scored two straight goals in just over a minute.
The Warriors dominated play from there, netting four consecutive goals in less than 10 minutes. O'Hara scored off a pass from Cook with 19:17 left, Cook scored again on an assist from senior Katie Fretz, freshman Christine Bradley had a free position goal and Sanderson assisted on a goal by Fretz to complete the run and give ESU a 7-2 lead.
Sam Alexander pulled the Huskies within 7-3 with 7:21 remaining, but O'Hara scored again 40 seconds later to reestablish the five goal margin. Bloomsburg scored its final two goals in the last minute of the game.
Junior Kirstin Mayberry made 12 saves in goal and senior Janelle Cronmiller had 13 ground balls to lead the ESU defense.
The Warriors will open a four-game road trip on Saturday at Lock Haven.
