SHIPPENSBURG - Hope Cornell hit a pair of game-winning home runs, including a walk-off homer in the ninth inning of the nightcap, to lift Shippensburg to 2-0 and 2-1 wins over East Stroudsburg University in PSAC East softball on Saturday.
Cornell hit a two-run blast in the fifth inning for the only scoring in the opener. In the second game, she broke a 1-1 deadlock which had stood since the third inning with a solo shot to lead off the bottom of the ninth and give the Raiders the victory.
Senior Jennifer Bensinger took the loss in both games but gave up just three runs on 10 hits in 10 innings of work. She shut out the Raiders (15-11, 3-1) for four innings and threw a complete game (6.0 innings) in the first game and threw four scoreless innings in relief of junior Jackie Battaglino in the second game before Cornell ended it.
Shippensburg's Lori Knopf tossed a shutout and struck out seven in game one, with sophomore SS Brittany Racek collecting two of ESU's four hits. Four of Shippensburg's seven hits went for extra bases but Bensinger pitched around most of the trouble to strand eight runners on base.
ESU (12-11, 1-5) left the bases loaded in both the fourth and fifth innings but Knopf kept the Warriors at bay, and Cornell followed a double by Rachelle Wedell with her home run in the fifth.
In the second game, the Warriors opened a 1-0 lead in the first inning as freshman 2B Brandi Stettler walked, freshman 3B Rachel Gieringer doubled and junior OF Kara Darcey had an RBI single.
Battaglino stranded all three Shippensburg base runners in the bottom of the first and kept the Raiders off the board until the third, when Courtney Steele homered to tie the game at 1-1. Shippensburg eventually loaded the bases again but Battaglino got out of the inning, and there were scoring opportunities for both teams but no runs until the ninth.
ESU had six hits in the game, including a 2-for-4 effort by sophomore OF Jamie Mingis.
The Warriors will look to edge closer to the .500 mark in PSAC East play when they host Millersville on Tuesday at 2:30 p.m.
